"Ore veins have a chance to change ore type every time they restock."
Does that mean everywhere have a chance to get all kind of ore providing you have the skill, or you still have to mine at certain location in order to have the chance to get higher level ore?
--Zeta 03:34, 7 July 2008 (PDT)

:An ore spot could provide any ore type, but how often they change type depends on how often they're dug. Your skill makes no difference to the chance of finding a rare ore, it only determines whether you can actually dig that ore up.

:If you find a rare ore type, milk it for all it's worth. It may not be there tomorrow (especially true on the more populated shards).

:Prior to this rule, all ore spots were set and they stayed as they were. You found a valourite vein, that was that - You could mark the spot in your rune book and mine to your heart's content. It's generally thought that the change was aimed at scripters, but like most anti-scripting attempts it really makes things better for those people. They still pull in more resources then anyone, only now that resources are rarer and hence worth more... - Bomb Bloke 06:28, 7 July 2008 (PDT)
"Elves have an increased chance of harvesting special ore types from colored veins (as opposed to finding colored veins)." Been a miner for more than 3 years and have no idea what nuance is trying to be stated in the above quote; the parenthetical clause offers no clarification. Would anyone care to explain the difference between "special ore types" and "colored veins?" --Ceruleus 03:12, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

:Sounds to me like it means that if a valorite vein has 10 ore to be dug, the elves will have a chance to get 7 valorite and 3 iron whereas a human will get 6 valorite and 4 iron(illustrative numbers only). I think the parenthetical was included to indicate elves get more of the good stuff, not necessarily having a better chance of finding it in the first place. --Tancred RedStar 03:38, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

:: Correct, though I'm not sure if the statement is actually "true". That's just how it is according to "official" race bonus documentation. I've got a vague memory of reading a forum post somewhere that suggested that elves can simply pull up more ore (either plain or coloured) from a given node, and so will get more coloured stuff overall.

Examples of "special ore type" are Shadow Iron, Dull Copper, Valourite, etc. A "coloured vein" is an ore node that, when harvested from, can produce those special ore types. - Bomb Bloke 04:30, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
"Mining veins in towns are half of what you could get outside of the towns."

Er, really? I'd heard some nodes stock double the amount of ore then others (24 vs 12), but didn't realise this was based on whether they were in a "town" area or not.

Or is this based on guard zones?

- Bomb Bloke 07:54, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

: It does not matter if it is in a town/guard zone or not. Some nodes have double the ore of others, true, but I have found them in the mountains west of Britain in the guard zone as well as in the wilds.
Paragon refers to an über-version of the creatures that spawn in Ilshenar. Introduced with Ultima Online: Third Dawn, the enhanced challenge of Paragon creatures necessitated an enhanced reward.

Paragon Creatures
There is a 5% chance, or 1-in-20, that any creature that spawns in the Ilshenar facet will spawn as a Paragon of its type. Such creatures appear in a special color known as "Paragon Gold" and have the term "(Paragon)" appended to their titles.

Paragons are noticeably more powerful than the normal creatures of their type. They take longer to kill, hit harder, have more powerful magic, very high health regeneration, and run very fast (thus making them difficult to escape from). Furthermore, they actively target from much further distances and also tend to re-target to anything that moves around them (though the use of the Teleport spell is safe after initially entering their range of sight). Fast and far is part of the enhanced challenge.

Paragon Minor Artifacts
The slaying of Paragon creatures may cause minor Artifacts to drop in your backpack. Ilshenar Minor Artifacts are awarded randomly upon the death of any such creature depending on it's Fame and your character's Luck.

Also, any creature that would normally drop a Treasure Map will, when spawned as a Paragon, produce a "Paragon Treasure Chest" instead (but only if a map would have been included in the loot). These chests, which must be opened using the Lockpicking skill, come with a treasure map that is one level higher than that normally provided as loot by the creature. The "Paragon Treasure Chest" will have the name "Recovered from creature name (Paragon)". The chests come in random hues, including a dark black and a bright white hue, which are often referred to as semi-rare.

Meraktus the Tormented Minotaur is the so called Champion of the Labyrinth. Her existence was shrouded in mystery - At first there was no idea she existed until her named appeared on some Talismans as a slayer property. At some point a group of adventuring players were killing Minotaurs at the end of the Labyrinth and discovered the spawn.

After killing several Minotaurs there is a yelling "I see invaders! Must warn the others!" After some more killing you start seeing shouting from Minotaur Captains, "Aid the others! Kill the invaders!" After a lot more killing (much more than the first two levels), Meraktus spawns with four Tormented Minotaurs in the large building on the top floor.

Both Meraktus and her escort have a "ground stomp" attack which deals area effect damage dependent on how close you are. Even while wearing a suit offering the maximum possible resistances, you should still expect 20-90+ damage. Melee attacks are not recommended.

Note that most Mondain's Legacy areas (with the exception of Painted Caves, as well as the elven populated Heartwood and Sanctuary) have peerless bosses which drop special crafting ingredients and artifacts. They also have extreme amounts of Hit Points. However, Meraktus is far weaker then a peerless and simply drops the same loot as your average monster.

In fact the battle is officially classed as a Champion Spawn, however there is no altar and no gold drops at the end. Furthermore, the progressive "levels" of the spawn are all exactly the same - there is no variation in the type, strength or numbers of creatures that appear throughout.
Firsthand Account
One of the first players to face Meraktus recounts what happened.

: Yes it was true. It first started out on Saturday when I received a message from a friend with a link to a Japanese website which showed detailed yet poorly translated information of the Minotaur Labrynith champion spawn.

: So the following day around 4 PM PST myself; Lord Braska and another friend Kerridwen went to the dungeon and started making our way to the heart of the dungeon killing off the spawn as we go. Slowly but surely we made it to the center building and explored around and unlike other spawns this one doesn't have an altar. At this time we were joined with our other friend B Krohon and another person who managed to get past all the spawns.

: We then decided to start killing of the spawn to see if anything happened. Eventually we got a message on our screen saying something along the line of 'A minotaur captain barks an order to his fellow scouts, "Aid the others! Kill the invaders!"' (There was another message before this, but I can't remember what it was.) With every minotaur felled the message repeated. Few more people managed to get in then. After quiet awhile more we finally got the last message saying, 'A minotaur captain bellows, "Meraktus has arrived!"' and on the top floor of the central building Meraktus the Minotaur (The boss of the dungeon) and four Tormented Minotaur spawned.

: At this time many others managed to get to the center and joined the battle. The Tormented Minotaurs can move pretty fast as I watched someone on foot being chased by one, I would have to say, half way through the dungeon. Alot of us got a nasty suprise though as it seems that both the Tormented and Meraktus have an area effect attack similar to Rikktor, like an earthquake, but I don't recall hearing the sound. It was much more powerful too the closer you are to the creatures for I noticed a few people that were close to one of them we're dropped to near death or even killed out right, myself abit farther away was dropped to about half health. Earlier on about 4 of us were killed standing next to one, luckily B Krohon went inside the building to rez Kerridwen when it happened, or else we would have to wait for the next living person to come and rez us. After awhile we dropped all the Tormented Minotaurs and got Meraktus back into the garden area of the central building which a combined attack brought him down close to death, before he unleashed an area attack after area attack nearly wiping us all out. We all retreated briefly into the building to get rezzed and as soon as I was up and running I ran outside with Shadowfang my Cu Sidhe and had him sink his sharp teeth onto the bloodied fur of Meraktus healing him like mad as they fought each other. Soon I was joined by two other Cu Sidhe's of my friends and several EV's from the other people with greater heals, e-bolts and such being chanted in the background, and not too soon after Meraktus fell at our feet.

: I guess the one thing that throws most people off is the belief that it would be like all the other champion spawns in which there is a central altar that would normally show you the progress of the spawn. Which is not so here, and unlike the other champs, there is no new creatures popping up with each new level. You basically keep killing all the minotaurs until you get each of the 3 messages I mentioned before.

: This is definitely not part of the Inu the Crone quest, and I think its something that was just overlooked by most people until it was done by us. It was right in the open this whole time, but seeing no real profit gained from just killing minotaurs when you have Miasma spawning near the entrance no one bothered with it til now.

: My thanks goes out to Lady Kerridwen of MLD and B Krohon of EK. two of the greatest and skilled hunting partners I know of along side my in-game wife Lady Elysian Bothwell. And another thanks to B Krohon who gave us the info about the monsters! You guys are awesome!

Humility is: a Shrine, an Ilshenar Moongate, and an inactive Virtue.

Shrine
The Humility shrine is located in the southeastern jungle of the Isle of Fire (177°49'N, 152°31'W). It is a fully functional shrine; a character may lock his or her karma, be resurected, or even tithe gold there.

A wearer of the Ankh Pendant who chants the word "Lum" at the shrine will receive an increase of +3 to either Mana, Hit Point, or Stamina regeneration for one hour. A character need not continue to wear the pendant to maintain the increase for said hour.

Moongate
Located between the Undead Fort and the Humility Graveyard, the Humility Moongate (53°27'N, 73°15'W) is tucked into a small valley along the mountains.

Virtue
There is no game mechanic for the Virtue of Humility, although one was designed but not implemented.

Original Design
Advancement in the Virtue of Humility was intended to encourage relationships between veteran players and new, or young, players through a Squire System. The benefits to a veteran player were to be considerable. By using the Humility symbol that is located on the Virtue Gump, a veteran player was to be able to invite a young player to become his or her squire. If the young player accepted the invitation, the veteran player would have a chance to gain in Humility whenever a young player gained points in certain skills. The young player would have gained skills at an accelerated rate.

There were to be certain variables that affected the gain of Humility points:
* The veteran was to remain close to the [young] character as the latter gained skill;
* Skill points gained through training dummies and NPCs would not have counted;
* [Young] characters would not have gained Humility points; and
* The veteran had to have been alive to gain Humility points.

Rewards for achieving Humility points were to have been granted on a 3 tier basis.
*First step: +10 Hit Points, +10 Mana, +10 Stamina;
*Second step: +20 Hit Points, +20 Mana, +20 Stamina; and finally
*Third step: +30 Hit Points, +30 Mana, +30 Stamina.

Reasons for Non-inclusion in Game Play
One possible reason why this particular Virtue was never activated is that there are simply not enough young players. A squire was only able to have one veteran relationship at a time.

Another possible reason is that the benefits conveyed, at the highest level, may have unbalanced the game.

Lore
Humility is one of the Virtues in the moral system of Ultima Online.

* Symbol: Shepherd's Crook
* Derived From: The opposite of Pride, the absence of Courage, Truth, and Love
* Anti-Virtue: Pride
* Original Class: Shepherd
* Original Home City: New Magincia
* Opposing Dungeon: Unknown, believed to be possibly Doom or the Stygian Abyss
* Mantra: Lum
* Companion: Katrina

Humility is the most difficult Virtue to understand because it lies outside Truth, Love, and Courage. The lack of these leads to Pride, but recognizing Pride and turning away from it leads to Humility. Lord Blackthorn perverted the Virtue to read "Thou shalt humble thyself to thy superiors, or thou shalt suffer their wrath."
Spirituality is: a Shrine, an Ilshenar Moongate, and an inactive Virtue.

Shrine
One of the more interesting shrines, Spirituality is located on the main continent about halfway between Britain and Trinsic (75°56'S, 19°32'E). To reach the shrine itself, stand at the top of the stairs and say "Om Om Om." It is a fully functional shrine; a character may lock his or her karma, be resurected, or even tithe gold there.

Wearer of the Ankh Pendant who chant the word "Om" at the shrine will receive an increase of +1 to Mana, Hit Point, and Stamina regenerations for one hour, with a 25% chance (i.e., 3 independent rolls) to get each increased to +2. A character need not continue to wear the pendant to maintain the increase for said hour.

Moongate
Located near the entrance to the Twisted Weald, with its Peerless boss Dread Horn, the Lord Oaks Champion Spawn, and the Blood Dungeon, the Spirituality Moongate (24°57'N, 14°41'E) is quite active.

Virtue
There is no game mechanic for the virtue of spirituality. The status gump for the virtue states, "This virtue is not yet defined."

Lore
Spirituality is one of the Virtues in the moral system of Ultima Online.

* Symbol: Ankh
* Opposing Dungeon: Hythloth
* Mantra: Om
* Companion: Shamino

According to Ultima V, Spirituality is to seek Truth, Love and Courage from one's own self and the world around. Lord Blackthorn perverted the Virtue to read "Thou shalt enforce the laws of virtue, or thou shalt die as a heretic."

Honor is a: Virtue; a Shrine, and an Ilshenar Moongate.

Virtue
When activated via the Virtues Menu, you may target a given creature that is entirely undamaged (that is, it's Hit Points, Stamina and Mana levels must be at their maximum). It could originally be used against players in addition to creatures, though this was removed in a later publish.

If you then kill the creature you are granted honor in accordance to it's fame level and how "honorably" you fought it. Allowing your target the first blow and staying close to it will grant you higher levels of honor then using ranged attacks from a distance.

Honor works hand in hand with Bushido in that activating it with a skill of 50 points or more also initiates the Perfection system.

Rewards
The reward for honorable combat is the ability to move amongst monsters without them becoming hostile to you. To do this, you must activate the virtue and target yourself. The effect ends after a certain time or when you next perform a hostile action.

You can invoke honor once every 5 minutes. The duration it last depends on how high you honor is. A knight of Honor will last 3 times as long as a seeker. This virtue only drains as you use it (as opposed to others such as Valor, which drain over time).

Shrine
Located in the far southwest (166°38'S, 28°20'E) of the main continent, the Shrine of Honor is a fully functional shrine; a character may lock his or her karma, be resurected, or even tithe gold there.

Wearers of the Ankh Pendant who chant the mantra "Summ" at the shrine will receive the following bonuses for one hour: +1 Mana Regeneration, +1 Stamina Regeneration. There is a fifty percent chance that one of those bonuses is increased to +2.

Moongate
Honor moongate is a popular means to reach Central Ilshenar.

Lore
Honor is one of the Virtues in the moral system of Ultima Online. See the article on the Virtues for more on that moral system.

* Symbol: Chalice
* Derived From: Courage and Truth
* Original Class: Paladin
* Original Home City: Trinsic
* Opposing Dungeon: Shame
* Mantra: Summ
* Companion: Dupre

According to Ultima V, Honor is Courage to seek and uphold the Truth. Lord Blackthorn perverted the Virtue to read "If thou dost lose thine own honour, thou shalt take thine own life."

Justice is a: Virtue; a Shrine, and an Ilshenar Moongate.

Virtue
Justice is one of the virtues for which there is a game mechanic. The only way to earn Justice is through PVP combat by killing murderers. Justice is expended at Champion Spawns to increase the number of Power Scrolls that are awarded.

Gaining Justice
Justice is awarded to the person who delivers the killing blow to a murderer, or red, character in Felucca. There is a timeframe of 8 minutes between being able to receive Justice again from a single target. This is to prevent people from "farming" Justice by continuously res-killing a red.

The amount of Justice gained from each kill varies with the amount of skill points of the killed character and the level of Justice their killer is currently at. After each kill, a message stating "You have gained in Justice" will be displayed. Once you have fully maxed out the number progress points you can earn a message will be displayed stating "You cannot gain more Justice."

Roughly speaking, killing a skill capped murderer will award up to 3 progress points while attaining Seeker of Justice, a point and a half while working towards Follower of Justice and a point for each kill while attaining Knight level.

Expending Justice
Justice allows you to "protect" another player in Felucca. While one is under the protection of another, the protector has a chance of receiving a Scroll of Power when the recipient receives one. The chance of receiving a "protection scroll" depends on your Justice level.

:*Seeker of Justice: 60% chance of scroll
:*Follower of Justice: 80% chance of scroll
:*Knight of Justice: 100% chance of scroll

The maximum number of scrolls that can be received from the Champion is 12 (6 from the Champion itself, 6 from Justice protection). The protection system is used in the vast majority of Feluccan Champion spawns as a way to maximize the profitability of a spawn. Felucca champ guilds often consider receiving 12 scrolls as the mark for a successful spawn. It is virtually unheard of for established guilds to use anyone below Knight of Justice for the protector. Protection scroll distribution is a spot of contention in many guilds. There are many different methods of scroll distribution with many people trumpeting the benefits and disadvantages of their own.

It is a common misconception that the protection scroll will be a duplicate of the recipient's scroll, at least in intensity if not the covered skill. This is not the case. The scroll received by the protector is random.

Shrine
The shrine is located on the main continent (87°17'N, 1°45'W). It is a fully functional shrine; a character may lock his or her karma, be resurected, or even tithe gold there.

Wearer of the Ankh Pendant who chant the word "Beh" at the shrine will receive an increase of +1 Mana Regeneration and +1 Hit Point Regeneration, with a 50% chance to get one of those further increased to +2 for one hour. A character need not continue to wear the pendant to maintain the increase for said hour.

Moongate
Located near Mistas in Ilshenar (53°50'N, 23°40'W), Justice Moongate is surrounded by low level monsters: Headless Ones, Imps, Greater Mongbats, Reapers, and their paragon versions.
Valor is a: Virtue; a Shrine, and an Ilshenar Moongate.

Virtue
It is the Virtue that enables characters to start a Champion Spawn. When the third level, or Knight of Valor, is reached, the character can invoke the virtue and target a Champion Spawn altar, thus activating it.

Altars can be targeted twice per spawn: once to start it, and one to advance to the next red candle. The second targeting of the altar is often used to finish the harder levels quicker, especially at Lord Oaks, Semidar, and Neira spawns.

Valor is obtained by killing creatures in a Champion Spawn. One random Fellucan spawn will activate upon server-up so valor may be obtained to start the rest of the altars.

Valor can be gained at Ilshenar Champion Spawns, as well as the new Mondain's Legacy champion spawns. However it does not appear that the virtue is gain in the Labyrinth.

Shrine
The location (157°36'N, 82°7'E) of the shrine is off of the main continent, specifically on an island south of Jhelom. The Shrine of Valor is a fully functional shrine; a character may lock his or her karma, be resurected, or even tithe gold there.

Wearer of the Ankh Pendant who chant the word "Ra" at the shrine will receive +2 Stamina Regeneration for one hour. A character need not wear the pendant after chanting to get the increase.

Moongate
Located in the north of Ilshenar (123°45'N, 55°53'W), Valor Moongate is the primary means to the Valor Champion Spawn. Also, it is close to the Cyclopian Garden, the Memorial to Gwenno, and Terort Skitas. It is an alternative route to the Pass of Karnaugh.

Character Overview
Iolo (full name Iolo Fitzowen) was one of the Companions of the Avatar, and is an important NPC in the history of Ultima Online and the Ultima single-player games. He stood for the Virtue of Compassion and the City of Britain.

He was based on a real person, a friend of Lord British's player Richard Garriott. The real person that Iolo was based on was married in real life to the lady who played Gwenno, who was Iolo's wife in the Ultima fiction.

Iolo in Ultima Lore
Iolo Fitzowen, a bowmaker and wandering minstrel of great repute, is known to all Britannia. Iolo was brought to our fair land by Lord British and the Orb of the Moons, as was his wife, Gwenno.

As long as he has been in our land, first Sosaria, and now Britannia, Iolo has sought to bring music to its peoples. During the Three Ages of Darkness, he traveled to many cities, bringing his tales in the form of songs. It was during this time that he met Shamino, who would become one of his closest friends, and most trusted companions. As they both moved from place to place, they often accompanied one another, and their friendship grew.

After the fall of Exodus, when Britannia was founded, Iolo settled in Britain, the City of Compassion. There he helped the children spread Compassion to all through their songs, until the Hero arrived on his quest for Avatar-hood, and asked Iolo to join him. Iolo agreed, and followed the Hero through mountains high and dungeons deep, until at last his quest was attained.

When the Avatar had left the world and the Codex raised from the Abyss, Iolo made his new home in the Forest of Yew, southeast of Empath Abbey, where dwelt also the talking horse Smith. He also created Iolo's Bows in Britain, in which he was aided by his wife Gwenno. When Lord Blackthorn assumed the throne when Lord British was lost, and the Shadowlords roamed the lands, Iolo was made a wanted man, and here he stayed, only venturing out when he and the other Companions summoned the Avatar. And it was here that the Avatar came, carrying Shamino, who had been struck down by the Shadowlords. At this time Iolo once again joined the Avatar in his quest, this time to save Lord British and Britannia. At last they succeeded, and the Avatar returned to his world, and Iolo to his home in the Forest of Yew.

Until the Avatar's next visit, Iolo continued to work at his shop in Britain, creating the finest bows and crossbows in the land. But when the Gargoyles summoned the Avatar to their land in an attempt to kill him, Iolo, along with Shamino and Dupre, rescued the Avatar, a bolt from Iolo's crossbow killing the Gargoyle priest instants before he would have plunged the sacrificial dagger into the Avatar's heart. Iolo accompanied the Avatar on this quest, and helped him to save Britannia from peril once again.

During the Avatar's two century absence, Iolo continued to live in his home in the ever shrinking Yew, though he took long trips to many cities, including Trinsic. Also during this time Iolo opened a new Iolo's branch, called Iolo's South, on the Isle of Deeds, near Serpent's Hold. His business in Britain flourished as well, and his newest invention, the triple-crossbow, sold well. During his last visit to Trinsic, Iolo's wife Gwenno journeyed to Buccaneer's Den, where she was searching for, and indeed found, information concerning the legendary Serpent Isle. Upon his return to his home in Yew, Iolo found a note telling where she had gone.

While visiting in Trinsic, the Avatar mysteriously appeared through a red moongate, which was later found to be the Time Lord's doing. Iolo and the Avatar set off to investigate a gruesome murder of the blacksmith Christopher and a wingless gargoyle. This lead them, along with the other Companions, to discover the true nature of the Fellowship, and the Guardian's plot to enter Brittania through the Black Gate. Iolo aided the Avatar in thwarting the Guardian's evil plans, and Brittania was safe once again.

When the Guardian trapped the entire castle within the huge Blackrock Gem, Iolo was trapped as well, along with the Avatar and many others. He was quick to give his friend advice and training as the Avatar braved the many perils before him, journeying to other worlds through the gem, in hope that he could somehow break the Guardian's power over the Gem, which at last he did.

The last adventure of the intrepid bard was to the Serpent Isle, in a search to find his wife, Gwenno, and Batlin, who had escaped before the destruction of the Black Gate eighteen months earlier. While in Fawn, city of Beauty, Iolo was given the white diamond necklace by Lady Yelinda, ruler of Fawn, to give to Gwenno when she was found. It was during this time that he was possessed by the Bane of Chaos known as Madness, and destroyed the City of Fawn. The Avatar eventually exorcised the Bane from his friend's body, freeing him. Iolo was finally reunited with his beloved Gwenno on Monk Isle, after he was freed from the Bane. Iolo followed the Avatar to Sunset Isle and the Grand Shrine of Balance, until the Avatar entered the void and was taken away by the Guardian.

Defined as the quality of having nonjudgmental empathy for one's fellow creatures, in UO, Compassion is:

* one of the virtues of the Virtue System;
* a Moongate to/from Ilshenar; and
* a Shrine.

The Virtue Compassion
The Virtue Compassion is but one of eight virtues found in the Virtue System. It is represented on the Virtue Gump as a heart.

The Virtue of Compassion allows a character to resurrect others with more than one hitpoint, as with normal resurrections.
The benefits of Compassion are well worth the effort in gaining the ability, as it helps prevent rez-killings from both players and monsters. It also gets the resurrected person back into the action faster and conserves the mana/bandages/time healing them back up to full hit points. There are also aspects of roleplaying in which having the Virtue of Compassion is desirable.

Gaining Compassion
Gaining in the Virtue of Compassion is accomplished by escorting NPCs or Prisoners to their requested destination. This is done either via Gate Travel or simply walking and will reward you with 500 gold and progress towards achieving a level of Compassion. Rescuing Prisoners from NPC brigand camps, orcs, lizardmen, etc. will reward you with more progress (roughly double) than NPC's escorted from towns.

As you make progress, the dots at the top of the Virtue of Compassion status gump will begin to fill after completed escorts or rescues. When all ten dots are completed per level, you advance a level in the Virtue. At each completed level of Compassion, the Virtue icon will fill-in with a darker color and the title will change to indicate your current level of achievement when you mouse-over the Virtue icon from the main Virtue menu. Your level of achievement in each Virtue is publicly viewable by other players if they double-click the Virtue menu in your paperdoll.

Higher levels of Compassion confer increasingly higher benefits, which is discussed below. You can only gain from five NPCs per 24 hours, therefore rescuing prisoners will speed your progress versus doing just town escorts. Additionally, after you have completed five in a 24 hour window, there will be a system messaging indicating you must wait a day until you will gain again (although you can still continue doing more that day, but will only receive the gold reward).

As of January 24, 2000 you can only escort or rescue one NPC at a time. Once you have achieved the highest level of Compassion, a system message will be displayed indicating "You have achieved the highest path of compassion and can no longer gain any further". This maximum cap will be roughly one dot's worth of gains past Knight of Compassion.

Research shows that using the fastest method of prisoner rescues, i.e., a gate casting mage, you will perform roughly:

* 2 NPC prisoner rescues per dot working towards Seeker of Compassion (Level 1)
* 3 NPC prisoner rescues per dot working towards Follower of Compassion (Level 2)
* 4 NPC prisoner rescues per dot working towards Knight of Compassion (Level 3)

At each level of Compassion, people resurrected by you will return to life with additional hit points (without Compassion, they resurrect with just one hit point). Resurrections by either the Magery spell of Resurrection or from bandages with the Healing skill will add the additional hit points. At this time, resurrections via the Chivalry spell of Noble Sacrifice do not confer the hit point bonuses of Compassion.

How about resurrections through Sacrifice?
Additional hit point bonuses after resurrections from a player with Compassion:

* Seeker of Compassion (Level 1): 20% of their hit points restored
* Follower of Compassion (Level 2): 40% of their hit points restored
* Knight of Compassion (Level 3): 80% of their hit points restored

At only 25-30 minutes a day for a few weeks working on raising Compassion, its not really that much of an effort. Additionally, at 500 gold per escort, doing escorts is a safe, easy and profitable way for new players to make gold.

As a side note, there are often several NPC brigand camps (many with Prisoners to rescue) on the little island just outside of Trinsic to the east. There is also a jail cell which always spawns a prisoner in the Orc Cave to the northwest of Britain.

As a minor note, there is a five minute time limit (lowered from 15 minutes on June 29, 2000) between escort quests but prisoners can always be rescued immediately (but still only one at a time).

Sacrifice is a: Virtue; a Shrine, and an Ilshenar Moongate.

Virtue
Sacrifice is a virtue that is gained through sacrificing one's fame to a monster in order to redeem it. The monster will then recognize it's wrong-doing and vanish into thin air. The monsters you can sacrifice to include Demons, Enslaved Gargoyles, Evil Mages, Gargoyle Enforcers, Liches and Succubi. In order to sacrifice to a monster it has to be unharmed.

Sacrificing may only be done once per 24 hour period. You have to be at least "Great" to be able to sacrifice. The more you sacrifice, the further you advance on your Virtue path. Sacrificing a Lord/Lady title will yield far more progress down the Virtue path than just Great or Glorious status. Also, the more powerful a monster is you sacrifice to, the more you gain. After sacrificing your fame will be dropped to zero.

A small amount of sacrifice also is gained by completing the quest given by Grizelda the Hag. Completing the Hag's Quest a few times a week will counter the weekly losses in Sacrifice, so that you won't have to loose all your well earned fame regularly.

Rewards
The reward for your sacrifice is the ability to resurrect yourself. For each level you reach on your way, you will be able to resurrect yourself once a week. Thus as Knight of Sacrifice (level 3) you can resurrect yourself 3 times a week.

After resurrecting yourself you will find all your belongings back in your backpack, except for any items that were looted in the time it took you to resurrect. This does not work though if you crossed a serverline (e.g. walked out of a dungeon) before resurrection. A message will warn you, if this is the case.

It is wise to only use this ability when in an emergency. You will not lose any virtue, but only one of the three resurrections.

Shrine
The shrine is located on the main continent (117°15'N, 142°44'E). It is a fully functional shrine; a character may lock his or her karma, be resurected, or even tithe gold there.

Wearer of the Ankh Pendant who chant the word "Cah" at the shrine will receive an increase of +1 Hit Point Regeneration, +1 Stamina Regeneration, with a 50% chance to get one of those further increased to +2 for one hour. A character need not continue to wear the pendant to maintain the increase for said hour.

Moongate
The Sacrifice Moongate (29°42'N, 10°28'W) is located in a cemetary near the Meer town of Lakeshire. Non-mages use this moongate as it is close to a brigand camp with a rescue quest. It is proximate to the Rat Cave.

An Ankh is a central image in Ultima lore and typically represents the Virtues collectively. It is also the symbol for the Virtue of Spirituality. Ankhs are similar in appearance to a Christian cross, but notably looped on top. Ankhs can be found in and on many items, buildings and locations, but are especially significant at Shrines.

At Shrines, such as shown in the picture below from Luna, you may Lock/Unlock Your Karma, Tithe Gold, or be Resurrected by using the contextual menu on the Ankh.

Originally, Ankhs were the ancient Egyptian symbol of life, but were adapted early into the lore of Ultima beginning with the solo-player Ultima games in the early 1980's.
Katherinehttps://www.uoguide.com/index.php?title=Talk:Powder_of_fortification&diff=19918Talk:Powder of fortification2008-04-01T02:10:49Z
Katherine:

__NOTOC__
You must visit the Shrine of Compassion on either Trammel or Felucca facets. Speak the mantra "mu" to be presented with the quest. This quest can only be completed one time per character. You can only take on this quest when the shrine is no corrupted (which is indicated by a black sparkle). Kill all red monsters in the area to cleanse the shrine.
Objective
* Obtain 1 A Heart Blackened By Despise
You must venture to Despise dungeon and kill a Large Ogre Lord. To force the large ogre to appear, kill normal Ogres and Ogre Lords. Eventually a message will appear over your head about hearing a large roar. This indicates the Large Ogre Lord has appeared in a random part of the dungeon. Only one heart spawns on each corpse, so you must get looting rights and be lucky if you are not alone. Once you have obtained a heart return to the Compassion shrine, toggle the heart as quest item, and speak the word "mu".
Reward
* A Heart of Compassion
This item is needed to complete the A Purifying Light quest.
Lore
Accepting
As you meditate on the virtue of Compassion, you start to feel utter despise towards the human race. The feeling burns intensely in your heart, filling you with blind rage and a compulsion to maim and torture any human that dare enter your home.

As the feeling begins to fade, you see a vision of a crystal ball resting upon a pedestal, and you somehow know that your path lies in that direction.
Completing
You place the blackened heart on the Shrine of Compassion and begin to meditate. Sadness overcomes you as you think about the fate of the ogre. Astaroth's influence in the ogre's life corrupted his heart to the extent that he was consumed by despise of the human race that his capability to feel content with his life, much less to find true happiness, was completely taken away from him.

When you open your eyes, you notice that the ogre's corrupted heart has been purified by Compassion. You pick up the Heart of Compassion, as you have a feeling that you'll need it later if you hope to do your part in battling Astaroth's plan.

New Haven is now the starting city for all new characters. It's a very friendly place with good infrastructure (you find nearly all types of shops there) and hunting grounds for beginners. Old Haven is still around (in the east) but it is inhabited by undead now. On most shards New Haven is visited by veteran players, so it's easy to get help if you have problems.

Places of Interest
The bank and the area in front of the bank are a good place to meet other players. On the evening it is usually very crowded there. The moongate is located on the peninsula at the south east end of the isle. Be careful when you venture there, because the farm on the way has been overrun by brigands. There are also corpsers and lizardmen near the gate.

The land on the southwest is inhabited by various animals. It is a good place to train taming or to hunt for various resources like hides and logs. There are many mongbats there that are good training for novice players. If you feel stronger, you can hunt the ettins in the wood near the south coast. There are always a handful around and they give good money (about 200 gp each). From time to time they drop nice beginner items.

Quests
Most trainers offer quests for newbies that require that you gain 50% in the skill they train. As long as you have this type of quest, you can go to Old Haven and hunt undead there. You will have an increased skill gain there. Please note that as long as you have these quests, you cannot buy training from a trainer. You have to abandon the quest and then retake it again after the training. You still get the reward at the end, which is mostly a very useful item. For example, for the necromancy quest you get a fully-filled necromancer spellbook.

Another type of quests are the escort quests. They are given by various NPCs in the wilderness and on the streets of New Haven. They usually announce them when you pass by. You just need to escort them to a specific shop inside the town. They give you 500 gp as a reward (just wait a few seconds after the arrival, then the quest resolves). There is a five minute timer on this type of quests, but it's still a good way to make money.
Katherinehttps://www.uoguide.com/index.php?title=Gorget_of_Honesty&diff=9011Gorget of Honesty2007-10-02T16:23:57Z
Katherine: Updated properties with new values; added availability in 10th Anniversary.

The Gorget of Honesty is part of the Virtue Set. When the entire set is worn, the item properties of the armor is enhanced. To get the gorget you must complete the Seeker of Truth quest by turning in 50 Book of Truth to Menzzobaanea the Seeker of Truth. He can be found in the Lycaeum.

The Gorget is also available as an artifact in the anti-Virtue dungeons as part of the 10th Anniversary event.
A Lower Requirements intensity of 100% means that the item has no Strength Requirement.
