Catskills is the local shard for North American East, along with Chesapeake Atlantic, Lake Superior, Great Lakes, Siege Perilous, and AOL Legends.

General

Catskills has one of the strongest community-oriented attitudes of the shards. Almost every week (and sometimes more often) there is a non-RP community hunt (Anne Nomilly tries to get one every Friday, typically meeting at the Yew Moongate in Trammel). Community hunts range from peerless hunts, to dungeon crawls (sometimes naked, sometimes armored), to champ spawns (both Felucca and non-Felucca ones), to just about anything you could do and call it a hunt. There are also many RP-oriented events, many (though not all) of which even non-RPers can enjoy.

Role Playing

For those interested in RP, there are groups in the Aegis area (SE of the Trammel Yew Moongate), Inethria (north of the road between Yew and Vesper, as if you were heading towards Wrong), and many other areas. Catskills is most famous for being the home of some of the most prominent Role Playing guilds that have ever appeared in the game.

One such guild was the ShadowClan Orcs, who revolutionized for Catskills' players what role playing really meant. They famously developed their own language for guild members to communicate and use; it was required. Another is Crimson Alliance and the Undead, who founded the great city of Necropolis in Felucca, that boasts a famously blessed keep. Undead Lords also made their mark and were most famous for the PvP aspect of Role Play, and engaging in epic guilds vs. guild warfare. Purple Guardians of Honor made their marks as the good guys everyone loved to hate, who alongside Guardians of Light and Knights of Yew they were famously proclaimed protectorants of three of the great cities (Trinsic, Serpent's Hold, and Yew) by none other than Lord British himself.

Currently, the most active role playing guilds are working on releasing a new RP PvP theme on Catskills based on the old, retired Order vs. Chaos system to bring it back as a roleplay-driven means to engage in storied PvP. Guilds can apply to join the theme, unified under a common set of ROE's (Rules of Engagement), and then would be asked to contribute to the storylines and battle plots along with other theme members. This new concept should be rolling out by mid November of 2010.
