Mondain was one of the primary NPCs in the history of Britannia. An evil mage, he is long-dead, though his legacy is still felt. Please see the fiction behind the Mondain's Legacy expansion for examples.

The destruction of his Gem of Immortality is the fictional explanation for the different shards of Ultima Online. The IRL reason was server capacity.
History
The young Mondain was born somewhere in the lands of Sosaria. He was the second son of the powerful wizard Wolfgang, king of the City-State of Akalabeth. King Wolfgang tutored his son in the ways of magic.

As Mondain's knowledge of the arcane arts of magic grew, he wished more and more to gain his older brother's inheritance. He therefore began to experiment with his power over minor creatures by controlling their minds and actions. Mondain could even kill them without compassion. His strange ways were noticed and became a constant worry to his father. When Mondain was fifteen, his father decided to act.

"Thou shalt take a year off from magic, Mondain. To improve thine attitudes and develop thy virtues,"- Mondain's father said, "I have arranged for thee to live with the brothers in the abbey, where thou shalt practice compassion and humility. Learn thy lessons well, my son and this ruby gem, which harnesses the power of the sun, shall be thine."

Mondain had other plans, though. And not even his father could stand in his way. The next night he slew his father and took the gem, for he hungered for power. Mondain then began to use his father's gem against itself to produce a black jewel that would render him and his evil immortal. He named this jewel the Gem of Immortality.

As his power grew he gained more control over the minions of darkness. He created many strange, hybrid creatures in his dark laboratories, including minotaurs, lizardmen, orcs and goblins.

He and the young British, Champion of the White Light, had an epic battle deep within the labyrinth of dungeons, where he was defeated and driven away from the kingdom of Akalabeth. Thus British received the title of "Lord British, Protector of Akalabeth". Such a defeat would not be forgotten by Mondain.

Mondain called for all the dark creatures along the universe, even an alien race from another universe responded the dark wizard. The few who escaped their grasp talked about some part tiger, part human creature with some powerful wands of strange fire. Terror invaded Sosaria, and Lord British's plans for unity became more and more appealing. But even the hope and will of the people of Sosaria could not withstand such a threat.

In their darkest hour, Lord British summonded a champion - the Stranger.

Mondain intended to conquer the world of Sosaria. Fortunately, the Stranger, who would become the Avatar, destroyed the Gem of Immortality, which kept Mondain alive and slew him before all of the world was conquered.

Nevertheless, something strange happened, which has never been explained in the series. Three of the four continents of the world apparently disappeared after Mondain's death. Some form of magic prevents anyone from arriving at the other continents. Sometimes lost ships arrive from the other continents, to never be able to go back to where they came from.

In Ultima Online, the consequences of the destruction of the gem are different than those in the single player series. Its destruction caused Sosaria to be divided into many planets which are copies of Sosaria. All these planets became "shards" which are servers of Ultima Online.

The wizard left behind his apprentice and lover, Minax (villain of the second game), and their offspring Exodus (villain of the third game) as well as the shards of his Gem (created the Shadowlords of the fifth game) and his skull (destroyed in the fourth game).

Mondain was also used by the gargoyle race as the physical embodiment of the virtue Control.
The Book of Truth is, like the Bell of Courage and the Candle of Love, an item that is a physical manifestation of one of the 3 Principles that underlie the Virtues (part of the mythology of UO).

The Book of Truth, like the other two items, has been seen in-game. It is located underneath the Lycaeum, and may be viewed by players. (The viewing room is accessed with one of the teleporters there). It was recovered by players after evil forces stole it, then scattered fakes around the map in an attempt to minimize the chances of the real book's recovery. (Presumably, removing the book to some distant place or destroying it both proved impossible). For more on that event, see Book of Truth?.

The book re-appeared as the reward of the quest A Quest For Truth during the In the Shadow of Virtue event cycle in late 2010. Players with enough Bane Chosen loyalty could corrupt it into a Corrupted Book of Truth.
Moonglow is found on the southern tip of Verity Isle, which was named to reflect the objective intellectual pursuits of the city's populace. Although the buildings were designed and constructed by the architects and masons from mainland Britannia, the overall appearance of the city is one of function over form. Buildings are sturdy and devoid of superfluous accouterments. The streets are narrow, but straightforward and well-connected. In many ways, the city looks like one large campus, with the Lycaeum as the central college.

Much of the study that goes on in Moonglow, and especially at the Lycaeum, is of the arcane arts. Nearly every form of sorcery, enchantment and potion is studied here, and most of the realm's research into new magic is performed here. Almost every great wizard interested in enhancing his or her personal abilities, or in increasing Britannia's pool of abilities, has spent at least a few months within the walls of the Lycaeum.

Not wanting to worry about inconveniences of daily life, the residents of Moonglow have worked hard to ensure they have every contemporary labor-saving device and invention known to the realm. Although nearly all is imported, the keen minds quickly dissect and analyze the latest gadgets, as their understanding of technology is usually quite strong.

tocright
New Magincia is one of the Cities & Towns of Ultima Online and the successor of the city of Magincia that is destroyed by demons during the Warriors of Destiny event cycle. It is on an island, and is accessible via Moongate or boat travel.

Depending on whom and when you ask, the city represents the Virtue of Humility or the Sin of Pride (Humility's evil opposite).

During the Fall of 2007, Magincia was attacked by demons (see Magincia Invasion) as part of the Warriors of Destiny event cycle, following the traditional Ultima lore which holds that the city is to be destroyed for its Pride.

On most of the major populated shards, the invasion was defeated the week of December 2, 2007, though the city was largely laid waste and ruined almost entirely. Pieces of it are available as items called rubble and are used by some as decoration.

On shards that "won" the invasion, there is a ferry from Trinsic. On shards that lost, such as Siege Perilous, Magincia was only accessible by boat. During the In the Shadow of Virtue event cycle, shards of the crystal of duplicity that are recovered from the Virtuebane duplicates are used to create a moongate and link the city to rest of the Britannia.

Lore
Early History
On the central island between Buccaneer's Den and Moonglow, Magincia was a natural target for plunder and magical side-effects. Ironically, it was the latter that tend to reduce the frequency of the former.

Perhaps the best way to describe Magincia at that time is "bright", but perhaps that is too kind. "Gaudy" might be more appropriate. Home to the largest diamond mine in the realm, the residents of Magincia had experienced the sensation of too much money. One of the many ways in which they had found to address this problem involved constructing ridiculously ornate buildings. Structurally sound shops would often had additional columns and supports solely to provide additional places in which to inlay gemstones and gold. The street signs were lettered in real silver, while the local watch wore badges that use precious metals to indicate rank.

After the Fire
Traditional Ultima lore, from the single-player games, called for this city to be destroyed by demons as a kind of punishment for its pride, with a demon lord named Virtuebane leading the unholy charge.

On the "shards" of UO, however, the city avoided this fate, until Fall of 2007.

"Yet...," stated UO.com, "history cannot be denied. It may be diverted, delayed - even altered to a degree - but never denied. Shadows have begun moving in an undercurrent as vast as the ethereal void itself, a darkness that once set upon a Britannia many of us have never known . . . Yes, Magincia will burn."

And so it did.

Magincia Invasion
:Main Article:Magincia Invasion
Following these attacks, which sadly saw Players helping the attacks along in order to maximize the spawn of special loot known as Rubble, Magincia on most shards is a burnt-out wasteland, a shadow of its former self.

On shards that "won" the invasion, at first the use of transportation spells into the city remained disabled, but a ferry from Trinsic still existed, and there was the implication that there is hope for the city's future. On the shards that lost, the city looked about the same, but the sense of hope did not exist, and there was no ferry from Trinsic.

However, early in 2008, transportation spells (including Gate) were re-enabled to and from Magincia, and a teleporter was put in place near the Trinsic docks. On shards that won the invasion, the ferry service is also still available, though is largely supplanted by the teleporter and the use of transportation magics. Moongate travel to Magincia was a one-way trip as the gate was corrupted and could not be used to depart the island following the invasion.

The Magincia Invasion was later revealed to be part of the Warriors of Destiny event cycle, heralding the coming of the Shadowlords.

Rebuilding of Magincia
Ultima lore calls for the city to be eventually replaced by New Magincia, a city based on Humility rather than Pride. The city is rebuilt during the In the Shadow of Virtue event cycle, whether based on Pride or Humility is a subject for debate.

Britannian forces, motivated by revenge for the loss of their beloved Queen, set foot to Magincia in late March, 2011 to put an end to the threat of Bane Chosen forces and their leader Virtuebane once and for all. Ethereal Warriors commisioned by the Meer Council joined these forces from the north of the town. After a long fight, all of the duplicates of Virtuebane and dozens of Ancient Hellhounds are killed. Virtuebane is lured to the black moongate near the altar he set foot to Sosaria by the Britannian forces while special pies which are distributed by Ricardo are thrown to further humiliate him. He is sent back to his own realm and the black moongate along with the altar is destroyed.

Shards of the crystal of duplicity that are recovered from the Virtuebane duplicates are used to create a moongate and link it to rest of the Britannia.

In order to raise funds for the reconstruction and restoration of Magincia, the provisional government of Britannia conducted a lottery for purposes of granting the right to construct private residences and shops around the island which is followed by the New Magincia Bazaar.

Although initially a community of artisans and gadgeteers, recently-discovered precious ores have turned it into a mining town. Minoc is essentially a rough-and-tumble frontier mining town. Furs are common, given the cold climate. It has very much the feel of a communitarian place, like an old Gold Rush city.

The Gadgeteers Guild is located in Minoc in order to provide easy access to the materials they need: the metals and ores, and the raw lumber. Minoc produces most of the raw materials such as ore and lumber for Britain, Magincia, and Vesper. Its inventors and gadgeteers design many of the nifty things foudn on sale in Vesper, but manufacture of this things tends to be moved to Vesper after the initial design is done in Minoc, in order to have quicker access to the marketplace.

Mount Kendall, just to the east of town, is a towering peak with a system of caverns and rich mining prospects.

Simply stated a Moongate, or gate, is a form of magical transportation. Some are static features, while others can be created by characters or put up by developers for specific events. There are moongates to every facet, and travel between different locations within each facet can also occur. However, gates cannot be cast in facet Felucca dungeons or anywhere in facet Ilshenar.

Moongates come in several colors: blue, red, and black are the most common. However there have been orange, white, and grey gates as well. Red moongates always exit in Felucca.

Moongates cannot be used when a character is flagged as a criminal or as an aggressor on another character. Sometimes a moongate will not function and a player will see the system message, "Your spirit lacks cohesion." This is because of a "cohesion" timer. There is a flat minimum to how quickly a character can go through a moongate again. That minimum increases for each time a character passes through a moongate within a certain span of time. By waiting approximately thirty seconds, the minimum returns to the initial value.

Static Moongates
A character who steps into a static moongate is presented with a checkbox menu of destinations. The menu feature was introduced to game-play in January of 2001. Below is a list of current static moongates, with the caveat that the Magincia moongate is currently damaged, only allows for one-way travel and may or may not be repaired:

Most of the Ilshenar moongates are proximate to an ankh, and are often referred to as shrines, although the actual Virtue Shrines are located elsewhere in Trammel and Felucca. The Ilshenar Chaos moongates does not have an ankh and thus offers no resurrection, karma lock, or tithing.

Additionally, there is a one-way moongate in the western portion of Nujel'm that will allow players to depart the island, but not return.

Magery Gate Spell
:See main article: Gate Travel
Mages can cast a Moongate to a particular location, as long as they have a rune or runebook that is marked with a spell called Mark.

Special Moongates
There are several types of moongates that fall outside the course of routine gameplay. Special events have even revolved around corrupted moongates.

Costume Moongates
During Halloween 2006, one holiday feature of the Shard of the Dead II were special orange moongates that would change a character into a Daemon, Dragon, Gazer, or many other creatures. The effect lasted until the polymorphed character entered a grey costume gate.
* List of Halloween 2006 Costume Gates

Magincia Invasion
:*See main article: Magincia Invasion
The moongate outside Maginica was damaged during the invasion to the extent it is now only one way. It currently can act as a destination from other moongates, but cannot be used to leave the island. It is uncertain if it will be repaired or rebuilt.

Harrower Gates
Once a Champion is slain, the hued skull that remains must be taken through the dark moongate that will appear. The gate will lead to a Star Room, which contains an altar for each Champion. Once all six skulls have been placed on their respective altars, the Harrower will spawn in a random dungeon in Felucca, and another dark moongate, leading to that dungeon, will appear on the altar.

Moongate Lore
Moongates made their initial appearance in the single-player Ultima games. Rather than the familiar ovals of today, they were rectangles. Early UO static moongates appeared and disappeared depending on the cycle of Britannia's twin moons, Trammel and Felucca. Trammel's phase affects where the moongates appeared, while Felucca's phase affects where they transported a character.

:*New Moon -- Near Moonglow on Verity Isle
:*Crescent Waxing -- Near Britian, on the mainland just off Britanny Bay.
:*First Quarter -- Near Jhelom on the Valarian Isles.
:*Gibbous Waxing -- Near Yew in the Deep Forest.
:*Full Moon -- Near Minoc off Lost Hope Bay.
:*Gibbous Waning -- Near Trinsic, northeast of the Cape of Heroes.
:*Last Quarter -- Near Skara Brae on an island northwest of Spiritwood.
:*Crescent Waning -- Near Magincia.

However, players often would simply walk their characters through the moongate over and over again until they were able to reach their intended destination. To help improve server performance, a feature was introduced whereby single clicking the left mouse button on a moongate will gave a description of what lies through the gate, which allowed players to know where the gate was going without having to jump through them over and over again.

Moonstones
Once found on various monsters, a moonstone would tell a character what phase a particular moon was in. When placed on the ground, they would create a temporary moongate. At the time there were only two facets and a moonstone would gate a character to the same coordinates on the opposite facet. Allegedly, other characters could not follow one through such a gate unless they were partied. Moonstones still exist and can be purchased from player vendors, however they no longer serve as a means of transportation.

Notes
* As an interesting aside, the Luna moongate will speak on certain occasions. Named Barry the Moongate, it will chastise characters who do not use their actual pet's name when issuing commands.
* Nystul of Lord British’s Court created a special moongate during the Trinsic invasion of 2000 that transported characters from Trinsic to Britain.
* The Buccaneer's Den moongate was introduced to allow murderers, or red characters, to be able to travel to Ilshenar.
<i>Renamed when the entire realm was given its new title -- when Lord Robert was defeated on the Crimson Plains -- Britain is the capital city of Britannia. Lord British's seat of power is located at what could be considered the interior vertex of the angular continent. It is situated beside a great river that runs from the eastern mountain range into Brittany Bay.

For its size, Britain is a clean city, looking much like an English city at the end of the Medieval era, just on the cusp of the Renaissance. Magnificent stone buildings intermixed with sturdy wood-and-plaster shops and homes. In the middle of the walled-city is Lord British's marvelous castle, complete with moat and draw bridge. Overall, Britain represents the latest and best of every discipline imaginable, second only to those communities that specialize in particular disciplines (and only in the aspects relating to those specific disciplines).</i>
Yew is located in the northwest region of Britannia, on the edge of the Deep Forest. The pastoral city is named for the dense population of Yew trees that surround it. Yew is less of a city than it is a collection of many homesteads. Dirt roads connect most of the buildings, which lends credence to the claim that it is a community, but often a considerable distance lies between the house of the various residents.

Deep within its woods is the hallowed Empath Abbey, home to diligent monks who are makers of the best wine in the land. Most of the houses are simple wooden cabins, although the Abbey is made of stone for durability. Also in the area is the Court of Truth. The land’s second largest jail in Sosaria, it is made entirely of reinforced stone and looks like a smaller version of Lord British's Castle Britannia.

The center of Yew proper is also the location of the portal to the Elf City of Heartwood, as pictured.

Dungy:

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_(Ultima)

The Avatar is the main (player) character in the Ultima series of games. He (or she) is not an embodiment of a god (as in the traditional meaning of the term "Avatar"), but of a set of ethic guidelines called the Virtues. In the game, you must balance your actions and behave according to the Virtues, for it is all that will set you apart from your enemies.

While the games avoid overt references to religion, the system of Virtues is loosely based upon various aspects of Christianity and Buddhism.

History
The Avatar was first known as the Stranger (or, more fully, Stranger from another world) in Ultima, when he (or she) defeated Mondain. He returned to bring an end to the revenge of the enchantress Minax, and to dispatch their hellspawn, Exodus. It is widely debated whether or not the Stranger and the Avatar are the same person, as the games themselves are not quite consistent on this issue. Ultima IV says the heroes of the first three games were several different persons, and implies that the party of heroes from Ultima III still lived in Britannia. But later games(Ultima VII Part Two: Serpent Isle as the most definite example) imply that the Stranger and the Avatar are one and the same person.

As far as the gameworld itself is concerned, this could be explained with gradual muddling of history (as Batlin explains in |Ultima VII: The Black Gate). The games cover a very long time span, and due to different rate of time in Earth and Britannia, there are long intervals between the games.

While the Stranger/Avatar followed the Virtues in later games, in the first three the player is not bound by any moral guidelines, leaving the future Avatar free to steal and murder, with only the authorities to stop him/her.

The fourth time the Stranger returned, his quest took a different tack. Instead of defeating an enemy, his goal was to follow the path of the Virtues, and retrieve the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom from the Great Stygian Abyss. In the fifth episode, the Avatar defeated a repressive regime over Britannia, and in the sixth he brought peace between men and gargoyles.

In the seventh, eighth, and ninth episodes, the Avatar battled the Guardian, finally destroying both himself and his foe to rid the world of him.

Dialogue
In Ultima I to III, the Stranger was a silent protagonist whose speech was never shown. In Ultima IV and onward, the player must choose keywords (in early parts by typing them out, in VII by picking them). Thus the other characters discuss things with the Avatar, but apart of the topic, the player never sees what the Avatar actually says. By tradition, the dialogue choices the player knows beforehand are "name", "job" and "bye" (and also rarely "health"). This is also parodied in Ultima VII where an actor playing the Avatar has hundreds of lines to memorise, most of them "name", "job" and "bye".

The first time the Avatar had actual dialogue lines was in Ultima VII, but even there full dialogue lines were very rare and only appeared in a couple of places in the games.

Ultima Underworld broke this tradition by being the first Ultima where the Avatar had full dialogue lines throughout the game, and Ultima IX not only had full dialogue lines, but speech to go with them.

Appearance and customization
Since the games focus on the spiritual growth and hope to teach some good ideas to the players as well, the implied idea behind the Avatar character is to make the in-game character a mirror image of the players themselves (the character in the game, in a way, becoming an "avatar" of the player), but this is not explicitly mentioned.

In all Ultima games (except for Ultima IX), the player is allowed to name the Avatar character how they want. Ultima IX does not allow the character to be named, but the option is again open in the fan-made dialogue patch, though none of the full audio dialogue is present.

In Ultima IV and V, due to graphical limitations, the player could only choose the gender of the Avatar character, but in most later games (including Ultima VI, Ultima VII Part Two: Serpent Isle and the Ultima Underworld series) several different character portraits with different skin and hair colors are available. However, in Ultima VII: The Black Gate the choice is reduced to gender only - both the female and male portraits have blond hair and fair skin. (If played with Exult with Serpent Isle installed, the Serpent Isle portraits are also available in the Black Gate.) The Avatar sprite is determined by class in early games, and always the same in Ultima V and VI. Ultima VII has two different sprites, one for each gender. In Ultima VIII and IX, there is no choice in gender, portrait or sprite/3D model - the character is male with blond hair.

The Avatar's trademark clothing often includes a chain mail, with a white, red or orange tunic (with a golden Ankh symbol on the chest and back) over it, and a red cape. Typically, he's also shown wielding a sword. His appearance varies from game to game and version to version, but usually follows this schema - and it is, of course, possible to use whatever clothing, armor and weapons necessary in the games themselves.

Exodus was a villain, the spawn of Mondain and Minax.

He was based out of Ilshenar, in a dungeon (aptly called Exodus Dungeon) in the central region of that facet. His meddling in the timeline of Ilshenar caused the official fiction of that facet to change. He was behind the invasions of certain cities by the Juka, together with Lord Blackthorn. Indeed, it is Exodus who is credited with "assisting" Blackthorn's transformation from philosopher of Chaos and spoiled, embittered nobleman to full-fledged evil.

Exodus was never seen in-game in UO, but it was said in February 2003 by Dawn, a Royal Knight of the realm, that Exodus had greatly faded and that his power was waning in Ilshenar, following the death of Blackthorn. (Apologies for earlier misreporting that Dawn had stated that Exodus had died.)

Ultima lore, from the single-player games, holds that Exodus was the prodigy of Mondain and Minax, and alludes to "it" being a sentient computer of some kind- programmed by the use of four different punch cards. The highly mechanized features of the Exodus dungeon appear to back that up to some degree.

Minax (Ultima) refers to an NPC in the single-player Ultima games. It does not represent Ultima Online history. It is plain that in UO, Minax is still alive, though inactive at the moment.

Single Player Lore
Minax was apprenticed to the dark wizard Mondain at a young age. In time, she grew to become his lover as well as his pupil. She survived her paramour's death and went into hiding.

Underestimated because of her youth, Minax was furious of the death of her tutor (and lover). Revenge set itself within her dark heart. As her talent for magic and capacity of malevolence far exceeded Mondain's, Minax decided to take control of the evils of the world without the gem.

Twenty years after the death of Mondain, Minax invaded Sosaria with her legions of Darkness. In order to assure that the Stranger would not interfere with her plans for vengeance, Minax invaded his homeworld of Earth. Once there, she used her dark powers to disturb the fabric of time, and destroyed the planet.

Lord British called for a hero to crush Minax's evil plans. The Stranger had narrowly escaped the destruction of the Earth, and answered British's call. Minax's castle, named Shadowguard, could only be reached through timegates (similar to moongates in the later games), and even then an enchanted ring was required to pass through the force fields inside.

The war against Minax's vile legions was long and hard, but eventually the hero hunted down the wizard, pursued her as she teleported throughout the castle, and destroyed her life with the quicksword Enilno.

With the dark energies released with the death of Minax in her castle of Shadowguard, the lands of Sosaria changed once again, reforming into two continents: Sosaria proper, and Ambrosia.

Unbeknownst to all, Mondain and Minax had produced a progeny, Exodus, an entity neither man nor machine.
Minax is an important NPC villain in the history of Ultima. Also called the Dark Mistress, Minax first appeared in the single player game, Ultima II: Revenge of the Enchantress, which was released in several formats from 1982 through 1985. She was also featured in the manga, or Asian comic book, Ultima: The Terror of Exodus. For information on Minax from the single player game, see Minax (Ultima).
----
<i>"The climax was the devastation of 2111, Minax's greatest triumph, when ancient civilizations born of love and beauty, wisdom and reason, turned on one another in hatred and destroyed most of the very earth that had nurtured them. If it were not for the time doors, we would not be here now. Only the ability to move in time enabled any living thing to survive..."

-- from the writings of Lord British</i>
----
Minax was the young female apprentice and lover of Mondain, also a great villain of Britannia. As revenge for her mentor’s death, Minax has sought to destroy the world.

She has been seen in-game on several occasions, such as when she led an undead invasion of the City of Trinsic and during the Age of Shadows expansion when she led a series of attacks on Britannia. During that event cycle, she was seen in the bottom level of the dungeon Destard, wielding a powerful artifact called the Doom Kiss.

Her followers are also one of the four Factions that constantly vie for control of Felucca.

The Shadowlords are 3 wraith-like, demonic entities and a part of Ultima lore. They were not actually seen in-game, except at the end of beta event, until the Mad Mage event in early Spring 2008.

There are three Shadowlords and thus one for each of the Anti-Principles: Hatred (Astaroth), Falsehood (Faulinei), and Cowardice (Nosfentor). Similar to the Candle of Love, Book of Truth, and Bell of Courage, the Shadowlords are the embodment of their respective anti-principles.

Astaroth, the Shadowlord of Hatred, was behind attacks on the Shrines associated with Love during the Spring of 2007.

The Shadowlords bear physical similarities to the Time Lord and the shadowy traders who "bought" blackrock from characters. However, the graphic originally attached to them was used for the Harrower.

After many years of being referred to but not actually seen (for example, see The Darkness and The Principle Pieces), the Shadowlords were finally seen when the "Mad Mage" Kronos unleashed his Blackrock Detector upon the world in early Spring 2008 (as part of the Warriors of Destiny event cycle, wherein the Shadowlords served as the primary villains). Kronos's machine brought the Shadowlords into the world, and ethereal "echoes" of them could be engaged, fought, and slain by players. They occasionally dropped a rare Artifact Robe called the Cloak of Corruption. The best "weapon," in terms of damage done anyway, to use against them was the Armageddon spell, while holding Blackrock. "Manifestations" of the Shadowlords, similar to the ethereal forms seen earlier, spawned in the Tokuno Islands, later in the Warriors of Destiny event cycle (see The Last in Line).

The graphic used for the Shadowlords was a variant on the one originally marked for them, but larger, more difficult to see against the background, and had been given two visible eyes which were very disconcerting to notice.

Some of the Shadowlords' followers comprise a Faction on facet Felucca.

The Shadowlords in Ultima Lore
The Shadowlords were introduced to the single-player game with Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny.

Captain Johne and his crew, aboard the ship Ararat were sailing the Sea of Britannia when they were overtaken by a whirlpool- and all went dark. When Capt Johne awoke, he discovered that their wreckage had washed up on a subterranean shore of the Underworld. Examining the crew, Cpt. Johne discovered that only he, and three others had survived. Exploring the area, Cpt. Johne located three shards of a once great gem (long lost pieces of the Gem of Immortality), and in doing so, he awoke a great corrupted magical force.

Years later, Cpt. Johne told the Avatar that “the shards, full of evil, drove me to kill my three companions, and from their blood sprang the Shadowlords. They spared me, only to taunt me until my dying day.”

Once the Shadowlords became manifest, they took possession of the gem shards that had created them, and immediately secreted them away in the far corners of the Underworld. Then, once they reached full power, and intent upon ill will, they kidnapped Lord British and corrupted Lord Blackthorn, aiding him in subverting the eight Virtues (ie. violating Honesty meant that the “offender’s” tongue was cut out).

Roaming Britannia, the Shadowlords haunted the towns, further twisting the Virtues into evil parodies of themselves. The only warnings that the townspeople would receive would be the sight of a comet in the sky shortly before one of the Shadowlords would descend upon the helpless town.

When not scouring the lands, the Shadowlords could often be found in the remote island citadel, Stonegate, where they guarded Lord British’s stolen Scepter.

The Shadowlords were finally defeated when the Avatar tricked them into entering the flames of Truth, Love, and Courage while at the same time he cast their gem shards into the purifying flames.
The Legend of Jaana and the Goblin King
A story about her is very telling about the limits of Justice.

It is said that, during a war between Humanity and Goblins, the humans captured a great goblin king, and brought him to Jaana, a judge at the time, for trial. She informed them, "this is war, just kill him." The people insisted that the king be tried, so Jaana donned her robes and listened to their case, heard about the goblin king's terrible crimes.

However, Jaana acquitted the king. His crimes were in the course of a war and besides, he was a goblin, not subject to humanity's laws. The proper course, she informed the people again, was to kill him in the course of war, not to parade him around for a trial.

The people were outraged as Jaana set the goblin king free, but their rage did not last long. Being a goblin, the king could not contain his bloodlust and attacked Jaana immediately upon being released.

Jaana killed him.
He is usually portrayed in official fiction as leading the True Britannians Faction in Felucca, and is assumed to be serving on the Royal Council that rules Trammel in Lord British's stead.

Exploits
He led the defenses when that city was attacked by the Undead Army of Minax and lead the expedition to repair the Bell of Courage, both immediately prior to the creation of Trammel.

He sought an alliance with the Meer when he fought alongside Dawn against the Juka.

More
Dupre, knighted by Lord British during the Avatar's two-hundred year absence, was one of the most valorous and honorable knights of the realm. First entering our realm at the end of the Second Age of Darkness, Dupre has since been a defender of the land and a fixture at local drinking establishments.

During the time of Exodus, Dupre made his home in Britain, venturing outside its steadfast walls often to do battle the vile minions of evil that plagued the land.

After the fall of Exodus, when Lord British created the Eight Virtues and founded the Eight Cities of Virtue, Dupre quickly adopted the way of the honorable Paladin. He made his abode in Trinsic, until the day when the Hero, striving to become the Avatar, arrived in Trinsic, and enlisted Dupre's aid in his quest. Dupre traveled with the Hero on his quest, until they parted upon the Hero entering the chamber of the Codex.

Dupre continued to live in Trinsic until the arrival of the Shadowlords, when he was driven into hiding at Bordermarch Keep. He aided the other Companions in summoning the Avatar, and when he arrived, Dupre gladly joined his friend in his quest to defeat the Shadowlords and rescue Lord British.

Until the Avatar's next visit to Britannia, Dupre spent most of his time in Serpent's Hold and Trinsic. But when Nystul sensed that the Avatar was in peril, Dupre, Shamino, and Iolo rescued their friend from the Gargoyles. Dupre helped the Avatar save Britannia and the Gargoyles during this Age of the False Prophet.

During the Avatar's long absence, Dupre was knighted by Lord British, and became Sir Dupre. He also went on a tour of all the drinking establishments of Britannia, while doing a survey for Brommers. Dupre was in Jhelom when he joined the Avatar once again, to stop the Fellowship and the Guardian, and save Britannia.

In his final adventure, the noble Sir Dupre ventured to the Serpent Isle, with Iolo, Shamino, and the Avatar, in a quest to stop the fiend Batlin and find Iolo's wife, Gwenno. When Batlin was killed, and the Banes of Chaos released, Dupre was possessed by the Wantonness Bane, which destroyed the town of Monitor, and most of its inhabitants. When he was finally exorcised of the Bane by the Avatar, Dupre was heavy with the guilt of all the deaths that he had caused while under the Bane's control. But when the ashes of a hero were needed to reunite the Chaos Serpent, Sir Dupre gave his life, so that the Avatar could complete his quest, and Dupre was made one with the Serpent of Chaos. This was the end of a truly noble Knight of Britannia.

Character Overview
Shamino is an important NPC in the history of Ultima and Ultima Online. He is, or was, a ranger, associated with the City of Skara Brae and the Virtue of Spirituality.

Shamino in Ultima Prime
Shamino, one of the Avatar's most trusted companions, has lived long in Britannia, and Sosaria before it. Before the time of Mondain, he was a ranger who wandered the forests of Sosaria in search of adventure. It was he who found young British when he arrived through a moongate into our world. It was he who taught and raised our Lord British in the ways of magic and the customs of our land. But eventually Lord British went on to seek his own way, and Shamino went his, again traveling throughout the land.

But with the rise of Mondain, Shamino was forced to stay close to cities, and he found himself at the Castle of the White Dragon. This is where he met Beatrix, princess and daughter of the King of the White Dragon, and fell in love with her. The King was overjoyed and arranged for them to be married. He built Shamino a castle, to the north of his own, and made preparations for the wedding, which was to be a year hence.

But one day, sixth months before his wedding, while Lord Shamino was seeing court, the Hero entered, who had been summoned to the land by Lord British to aid in the fight against Mondain. But as a Lord of the Realm it was his duty to test the Hero, so he sent the Hero into one of the nearby dungeons to slay the vile creatures that had come out of it of late. When the Hero had accomplished this task Shamino put all of he resources of his castle at the Hero's disposal. But when the Hero had gone the vile creatures of Mondain, Orcs, Goblins, and worse, began to attack the settlements even harder than before.

Shamino decided to travel to the lands of his friend Lord British to seek his aid in the fight against then Goblins. He promised to return within the month, with reinforcements to drive the Goblins from the lands. But before he could return, the Hero slew the evil wizard Mondain and shattered the Gem of Immortality, causing the four continents of Sosaria to be sundered, leaving Shamino stranded in the Lands of Lord British, unable to return to his castle and Beatrix.

Here he remained, helping his long-time friend Lord British against the daemons that plagued the land during the Second Age of Darkness in the reign of Minax. But when the Isle of Fire arose out of the sea, and the Hell-Spawn Exodus began his assault, Shamino volunteered to explore the Castle Death, in the hope of finding a weakness in Exodus or his plans. It is not known exactly what transpired within the walls of that castle, only that Shamino barely escaped with his life, and rendered temporarily insane by his horrible experience.

When he regained his sanity at last, he went to West Montor to recuperate with his friend Sentri. There he stayed until the destruction of Exodus, and the great cataclysms that took place afterwards.

When Lord British created the Virtues and established the eight cities of Britannia, Shamino took up the life of a ranger once again. He roamed throughout Spiritwood and the Deep Forest, and when he did settle, it was in Skara Brae, but only for a short time. He was at peace, yet he was restless.

Then Lord British called forth the Hero for a fourth time, this time to become an Avatar, an embodiment of the Eight Virtues. Shamino joined the Hero in his quest, following into deep dungeons, dark forests, high mountains, and to the last Altar of Virtue at the bottom of the Abyss.

After the Avatar returned to his world, and the Codex was raised, Shamino returned to his wandering ways once again, until the disappearance of Lord British, and the emergence of the Shadowlords. When he and the other companions became wanted criminals by order of Blackthorne, Shamino and the others commissioned the royal coin maker to mint a magical coin with which they summoned the Avatar. Shamino was the first to greet him when he arrived, but at that moment the Shadowlords arrived and struck Shamino down. It took Shamino a long time to fully recover, but he accompanied the Avatar on his quest to destroy the Shadowlords and rescue Lord British.

Shamino became more involved with the court after Lord British was rescued and the Avatar returned to Earth, though he still spent much of his time in the wilderness. But when the Avatar was in danger, Shamino, along with his friends Dupre and Iolo, rescued the Avatar from the clutches of the Gargoyles, and accompanied him on his quest to save Britannia, and the Gargoyles as well.

During the two-hundred years of the Avatar's absence, Shamino eventually settled down in Britain, where he fell in love with an actress by the name of Amber. But when the call to adventure sounded, and the Avatar returned, Shamino was quick to join him as they uncovered the devious plots of the Fellowship and the Guardian. During the Guardian's attempted invasion of the land while the Avatar and many others were trapped under the Blackrock Gem that surrounded Castle British, Shamino helped to repel the assault.

In his latest journey, he accompanied the Avatar, Iolo, and Dupre on their quest to find Gwenno and the fiend Batlin. It was here that he was possessed by the Chaos Bane, Anarchy. He was finally exorcised of the Bane by the Avatar, but not before he brought about the destruction of the city of Moonshade, though this was not done of his own free will. He and Iolo were left behind when the Avatar was teleported into the void and captured by the Guardian.

Shamino in UO
Shamino has been seen in UO periodically. He was present at the memorial service for Blackthorn, and he was present during the Gargoyle's Redemption scenario. Also, Shamino's Best Crossbow is named for him. Some sources say he is a member of the Ruling Council.

Character Overview
Iolo (full name Iolo Fitzowen) was one of the Companions of the Avatar, and is an important NPC in the history of Ultima Online and the Ultima single-player games. He stood for the Virtue of Compassion and the City of Britain.

He was based on a real person, a friend of Lord British's player Richard Garriott. The real person that Iolo was based on was married in real life to the lady who played Gwenno, who was Iolo's wife in the Ultima fiction.

Iolo in Ultima Lore
Iolo Fitzowen, a bowmaker and wandering minstrel of great repute, is known to all Britannia. Iolo was brought to our fair land by Lord British and the Orb of the Moons, as was his wife, Gwenno.

As long as he has been in our land, first Sosaria, and now Britannia, Iolo has sought to bring music to its peoples. During the Three Ages of Darkness, he traveled to many cities, bringing his tales in the form of songs. It was during this time that he met Shamino, who would become one of his closest friends, and most trusted companions. As they both moved from place to place, they often accompanied one another, and their friendship grew.

After the fall of Exodus, when Britannia was founded, Iolo settled in Britain, the City of Compassion. There he helped the children spread Compassion to all through their songs, until the Hero arrived on his quest for Avatar-hood, and asked Iolo to join him. Iolo agreed, and followed the Hero through mountains high and dungeons deep, until at last his quest was attained.

When the Avatar had left the world and the Codex raised from the Abyss, Iolo made his new home in the Forest of Yew, southeast of Empath Abbey, where dwelt also the talking horse Smith. He also created Iolo's Bows in Britain, in which he was aided by his wife Gwenno. When Lord Blackthorn assumed the throne when Lord British was lost, and the Shadowlords roamed the lands, Iolo was made a wanted man, and here he stayed, only venturing out when he and the other Companions summoned the Avatar. And it was here that the Avatar came, carrying Shamino, who had been struck down by the Shadowlords. At this time Iolo once again joined the Avatar in his quest, this time to save Lord British and Britannia. At last they succeeded, and the Avatar returned to his world, and Iolo to his home in the Forest of Yew.

Until the Avatar's next visit, Iolo continued to work at his shop in Britain, creating the finest bows and crossbows in the land. But when the Gargoyles summoned the Avatar to their land in an attempt to kill him, Iolo, along with Shamino and Dupre, rescued the Avatar, a bolt from Iolo's crossbow killing the Gargoyle priest instants before he would have plunged the sacrificial dagger into the Avatar's heart. Iolo accompanied the Avatar on this quest, and helped him to save Britannia from peril once again.

During the Avatar's two century absence, Iolo continued to live in his home in the ever shrinking Yew, though he took long trips to many cities, including Trinsic. Also during this time Iolo opened a new Iolo's branch, called Iolo's South, on the Isle of Deeds, near Serpent's Hold. His business in Britain flourished as well, and his newest invention, the triple-crossbow, sold well. During his last visit to Trinsic, Iolo's wife Gwenno journeyed to Buccaneer's Den, where she was searching for, and indeed found, information concerning the legendary Serpent Isle. Upon his return to his home in Yew, Iolo found a note telling where she had gone.

While visiting in Trinsic, the Avatar mysteriously appeared through a red moongate, which was later found to be the Time Lord's doing. Iolo and the Avatar set off to investigate a gruesome murder of the blacksmith Christopher and a wingless gargoyle. This lead them, along with the other Companions, to discover the true nature of the Fellowship, and the Guardian's plot to enter Brittania through the Black Gate. Iolo aided the Avatar in thwarting the Guardian's evil plans, and Brittania was safe once again.

When the Guardian trapped the entire castle within the huge Blackrock Gem, Iolo was trapped as well, along with the Avatar and many others. He was quick to give his friend advice and training as the Avatar braved the many perils before him, journeying to other worlds through the gem, in hope that he could somehow break the Guardian's power over the Gem, which at last he did.

The last adventure of the intrepid bard was to the Serpent Isle, in a search to find his wife, Gwenno, and Batlin, who had escaped before the destruction of the Black Gate eighteen months earlier. While in Fawn, city of Beauty, Iolo was given the white diamond necklace by Lady Yelinda, ruler of Fawn, to give to Gwenno when she was found. It was during this time that he was possessed by the Bane of Chaos known as Madness, and destroyed the City of Fawn. The Avatar eventually exorcised the Bane from his friend's body, freeing him. Iolo was finally reunited with his beloved Gwenno on Monk Isle, after he was freed from the Bane. Iolo followed the Avatar to Sunset Isle and the Grand Shrine of Balance, until the Avatar entered the void and was taken away by the Guardian.

Blackthorn is a great, tragic villain of Ultima Online. His name is very often misspelled to "Blackthorne," but "Blackthorn" is the proper spelling.

Originally, he was a friend and ally of Lord British. The two maintained their friendship even after Blackthorn founded the philosophy of Chaos to counter the dominance of Lord British's Virtues. While their followers sometimes slaughtered one another in the streets (through the Chaos and Order system, now defunct), British and Blackthorn continued to play chess and debate philosophy.

However, when he did not immediately ascend to the throne upon British's first absence, Blackthorn became bitter and resentful. Despite the tolerance and egalitarian sentiments of Chaos, at heart Blackthorn was an aristocrat, and thought, simply by right of noble birth, that he should have the throne until British returned. He succumbed to the temptations of the villain Exodus, and became true evil. He also became a half-human, half-machine monstrosity (with an obvious influence from the Borg from Star Trek), and the subject of a toy designed by Todd McFarlane, the noted comic book artist, that was included with the box for the Lord Blackthorn's Revenge expansion. (See the pages on the Gargoyle's Redemption, Blackthorn's Damnation, and Plague of Despair scenarios.)

He took up residence in Ilshenar. After growing impatient, and following Exodus's apparent death, Blackthorn launched an all-out attack on the City of Yew. During the fight, he was slain by Dawn.

Blackthorn's Grave is found near his old castle in Britain on the Felucca facet.

At a memorial service for Blackthorn, Lord British stated that it was Blackthorn's death that caused his (temporary) return to Britannia. And further stated:

"My friend Lord Blackthorn is dead, and I am sorrowful at his passing. He became corrupted by great Evils, and now is no more. Though we were often at odds, the truth of his downfall wears upon my soul."

And also stated that, as a monument to Blackthorn's ideas, he was abandoning his goal of uniting the Shards, under the Virtues.

Thus, in death, Blackthorn effectively won the Chaos/Order wars.

On both facets, Blackthorn's castle is still accessible, gathering dust, used occasionally for roleplayed villainy, and standing as a monument to how easily Chaos can become Pride. He also has a castle in Central Ilshenar (from when he turned evil).

Here is a story on Blackthorn's memorial service:

Originally known as the Zog Cabal, the Followers of Armageddon were great NPC villains in the history of Ultima Online.

They announced their coming by appearing (either at the funeral of an early victim of theirs, or at the West Britain Bank depending upon which source one uses), and speaking the following ominous words:

:"All of your heroes, all of your institutions, all of your ORDER
:will FALL to US.
:WE are the ZOG CABAL.
:WE are LEGION.
:WE DEVOUR STRUCTURE.
:AND GIVE BACK CHAOS.
:MAKE YOUR PEACE WITH LIFE.
:FOR IT SHALL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN."

Generally speaking, the Followers fought for chaos (at least at the time this was not the same as Blackthorn's Chaos though since then Blackthorn's Chaos has unfortunately succumbed to evil), destruction, and decay.

Some say they were associated, weakly, with other villains (such as Juo'Nar), and some say they were more or less on their own.

They were pursued by Crawworth, in revenge for killing a member of his family early in their evil "career," and by Halston Montil, for reasons that are considered more conventionally virtuous.

They acquired their second name by their acquisition of the Armageddon(or Doomsday) spell from the Wisps, and then their use of that spell. Though they failed to acquire enough Blackrock to destroy the world with that spell, they did considerable damage along the way, among other things causing geologic events which accidentally opened up the Lost Lands.

The Followers were commonly considered more or less dead until 2008, having allegedly met their end in the dungeon Shame.

Vestiges of them could still be found. The Evil Mages on one of the levels of the Wisp Dungeon or Sorcerer's Dungeon in Ilshenar are linked to them, as is evidenced by statues and various other items found in that dungeon. Also, an offshoot group appeared when Blackrock returned to the realm, as part of the Inu the Crone Chapter of the Warriors of Destiny event cycle.

The followers of the Followers were also occasionally seen as villains in RP.

However, in the Summer of 2008, the FoA came back in a major way, participating in the slaughter of the Royal Council, as a form of tribute offered to the foul Shadowlords in the Hope for the Future Chapter of the Warriors of Destiny event cycle.

The Time Lord is a mysterious NPC in the history of Ultima and UO. He has been spotted several times and has had major impacts on the course of events. However, his exact nature and purposes seem to remain largely unknown.

He brought the news to Lord British of the different Shards upon which we all live, in a conversation overhead both by Lord Blackthorn and Sherry the Mouse. Their overhearing of that conversation altered history in major ways. Anger over a deal made between the Time Lord and Nystul led to the founding of the Council of Mages Faction. He was said to be the mysterious figure that appeared at certain dimensional Rifts created by Blackrock. During this event, due to a highly amusing but, this legendary supernatural creature could teach Player Characters in the Blacksmithing and Arms Lore Skills.

Most recently as of the time of writing (January 2009), the Time Lord was seen near the Blackrock Detector, for part of the Mad Mage event. He engaged in a brief, unfriendly conversation with the Shadowlord of Hate, Astaroth.

The role he will play in the Warriors of Destiny event cycle is as unsure and ambiguous as is the role he has already played in Britannian history.

The Ethereal Void is a place within the fiction of UO.

It seems to be similar to the "Astral Plane" seen in Dungeons and Dragons, in that it is similar to space, but has breathable air.

It has been seen in the single-player Ultima games, but was not been seen in UO until the Mad Mage event (see next paragraph for an important qualification), when the Blackrock Detector created a mirror image of Moonglow in it, within which monsters were found, and from which the Shadowlords escaped into Britannia.

Though the Void wasn't specifically referred to at the time, in retrospect there's a good chance that the Void Shadow Dungeon was located there, as was a strange area that could be gotten to via the Magincia Moongate after the conclusion of the Magincia Invasion event (except on shards, such as Siege Perilous, that lost the event).

Despite their physical similarities, there is simply no indication (as of Summer 2008) that the Ethereal Void is the same as the Sea of Stars that surrounds the continents of Malas.

Ultima Prime is a term used by some players for the Ultima single-player games upon which UO is based, and the fiction that underlies them.

Ultima I
In Ultima I, the Gem of Immortality - which contained a complete copy of Sosaria - was splintered into Shards in order to defeat Mondain. The original "Prime" world continued on its pre-ordained course (the single-player games), whereas life on the Shards continued along without the Stranger (who destroyed the gem).

Ultima II: Revenge of the Enchantress
In Ultima II: Revenge of the Enchantress, the Stranger was again summoned from across the Ethereal Void to battle Minax (Ultima), Mondain's apprentice and consort.

Ultima III: Exodus
In Ultima III: Exodus, the Stranger returns to Sosaria to find the world much changed from the last visit- both in the amount of time passed, and the reformation of the contenents. This time, a new evil threatens the land: Exodus, the prodigy of Mondain and Minax's dark magic. Or, is Exodus a hellish combination of science and sorcery?

Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar
In Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, the Stranger returns to Sosaria to find that with the destruction of Exodus, the world was once again devastated- islands rose and sank; fertile plains became desserts; and the formation of the continent was again drastically altered. Coming out of the Dark Ages of Mondain, Minax, and Exodus, Lord British is searching for a new moral code to unite his people. Becoming a paragon of the 8 Virtues, and their 3 Principles, the Stranger officially becomes known as the Avatar. Braving the darkest dungeons, and ripping the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom from the depths of the Abyss, the Avatar brings a new age of enlightenment to Lord British’s realm.

Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny
Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny finds Britannia in crisis! Lord British is missing, and Lord Blackthorn is acting as regent king. Only, something is amiss with the new regency. Blackthorn has converted the original Virtues, and now they offer something darker, something more self-serving. The Avatar discovers that when the Codex was ripped from the depths of the Abyss, immense underground caverns were created, thus exposing three shards from the corrupt Gem of Immortality. These shards eventually possessed three people, and transformed them into the Shadowlords—the maligned influence behind Lord Blackthorn’s rule and Lord British’s kidnapping.

Ultima VI: The False Prophet
Ultima VI: The False Prophet finds the Avatar in mortal peril. Typically, when the Avatar traveled across the Ethereal Void void, it was through a Blue moongate—this time, when the Avatar is pulled to Britannia, it is through a Red moongate. Not only is the gate different, but the arrival locale is too! The Avatar was summoned to some sort of demonic sacrificial altar. Iolo, Shamino, & Dupre arrive in the nick of time, and rescue the Avatar- gating back to Lord British’s castle. The Avatar once again learns of massive destruction- when Lord British was rescued from the Underworld, massive earthquakes struck the land, and the subterranean catacombs collapsed upon themselves. Now, Britannia and its Shirnes of Virtue are being overrun by Gargoyles. It was they who tried to sacrifice the Avatar! Unbeknownst to Lord British and the Avatar, the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom used to be the Gargoyle’s sacred text- which was stolen from the Abyss; and, when the subterranean catacombs collapsed- they collapsed on top of the Gargoyle city states! The Avatar may have been a savior for the land of Britannia, but the Garolyes only see him as a False Prophet! And now, a time of reckoning has come.

Ultima VII Black Gate & Serpent Isle
Ultima VII: Black Gate & Serpent Isle opens with a murder. A ritualistic murder brings the Avatar back to Britannia. During the course of the investigation, the Fellowship religion is looked into, and the the driving force behind the Fellowship is the Guardian. The Guardian talks to its followers, helps its followers, empowers its followers, and the Guardian wants its followers to build a device out of Blackrock that will generate a Black Moongate. How could this possibly be a bad thing? The Avatar must expose the Fellowship for what they are (and the Guardian), and pursue the ringleaders across Britannia, through the Serpent Pillars, and onto the Serpent Isle, the ancesteral home of the Ophidian Race.

Ultima VIII: Pagan
Ultima VIII: Pagan picks up where Serpent Isle left off - with the Avatar racing through a questionable moongate, to pursue the Guardian's forces. In doing so, the Avatar finds himself in the alien land of Pagan, where the Guardian holds dominion, and nothing is pleasant. The Avatar must learn a new system of magic involving Pagan Reagents, and overcome elemental forces. To survive, to escape, choices of what is the lesser evil must be made.

Ultima IX: Ascension
Ultima IX: Ascension summons the Avatar back to Britannia one last time. The twin moons are out of alignment, on a collision course with Sosaria, the moongates are unstable, and magic is unpredictable at best. When the Avatar seeks assistance, he finds that his old comrades are either missing, insane (blackrock infection?) or have become corrupt from the Guardian's influence. The Avatar must finally acknowledge that he is both savior and destroyer - when he became the Avatar, his shadow self (the non-virtue traits of himself that he cast off) became personified, and became the force known as the Guardian.

Ascension ends with the restoration of the virtues, the realignment of the moons, and the Guardian reintegrating into the Avatar’s self. The Avatar/Guardian then ascends into the heavens and becomes a new constellation, the Ankh.

The term Virtue refers to the moral system of Ultima Online and to a game mechanic that grants bonuses for performing certain actions.

There are eight components of the virtue paradigm: Compassion, Honesty, Honor, Humility, Justice, Sacrifice, Spirituality, and Valor. The game mechanic is accessed via the Virtue Gump. The philosophy behind the Virtues is opposed by the philosophy of Chaos; the individual virtues are opposed by a sin that is its opposite. Additionally, each virtue has a mantra that is usually of use at the respective Shrine.
tocleft<br clear="all">
Ultima Online Virtue System
Most often, Virtue refers to the in-game system wherein players can perform certain actions based on or related to the Virtues, and achieve certain in-game powers. Only five of the eight virtues currently are active.

In the 2D client, the system is accessed by double-clicking the symbol at the very top of a character's paperdoll. For information on how to access the Virtue system in the Kingdom Reborn client, see Virtues Menu.

For detailed information on each virtue, prerequisite, and benefit, see the following main articles:
Active Virtues
:*Compassion: A Heart (NPC escort quests / resurrect others with up to 80% full health)
:*Honor: A Chalice (Honoring then killing monsters / walk amidst monsters without being attacked)
:*Justice: A Set of Scales (Killing reds / increased power scrolls amounts)
:*Sacrifice: A Teardrop (Sacrificing fame / self resurrection)
:*Valor: A Sword (Kill champion spawn monsters / ability to activate and advance champion spawns)

Inactive Virtues
:*Honesty: An Open-Palmed Hand (inactive)
:*Humility: A Shepherd’s Crook (inactive)
:*Spirituality: An Ankh (inactive)

Ultima Virtues
Each of the eight virtues are derived from one or more of the following Principles: Truth, Love, and Courage. Each principle is in turn embodied by an item: The Book of Truth, The Candle of Love, and the Bell of Courage.

All of these items have been seen in-game, or were dealt with at some point in the history of UO. The Bell of Courage was broken and then repaired through use of Blackrock. The Candle of Love is located under the winery in Yew. And while the Cavern of the Candle of Love is currently closed off, blessed candles that were lit by the Candle of Love are owned by some players and are seen from time to time. The Book of Truth is located in a chamber under the Lycaeum, and can be seen by players.

Here is a popularly-used chart that states the mantra of each virtue, its associated sin, and the principles from which it is derived, along with other information (for example, one will need to know the associated color of Humility to accomplish the Cloak of Humility quest).

The mantras are occasionally used in-game, but the "Words of Power" have never been used. The Virtues in Ultima lore were also associated with certain professions, but those seem less important in UO's more flexible system, and thus have been omitted from the chart.

The Embodiment of the Virtues in the game is the Avatar. In the single-player Ultima games, the Avatar was the character being played. In UO, the Avatar is basically a mythical "Christ figure" who is referred to but is not seen. He was the "stranger" who slew Mondain.

The relationship between the Principles and Virtues is sometimes explained this way:

* Honesty is respect for Truth ("that which, when you possess it, means all may rely on your every word");
* Compassion is Love of others ("the quality that compels one to share the journeys of others");
* Valor is Courage to stand up against risks ("that which answers when great deeds are called for" and "the cloak that protects the other virtues");
* Justice is Truth, tempered by Love ("that which should be the same for nobles and serfs alike");
* Sacrifice is Courage to give oneself in name of Love ("that which is loath to place the self above all else");
* Honor is Courage to seek and uphold the Truth ("that which shirks no duty");
* Spirituality is to seek Truth, Love and Courage from one's own self and the world around ("that which, in knowing the self, knows all");
* Humility is the opposite of Pride - the absence of Truth, Love or Courage ("That which serfs are born with, but nobles must strive to attain").

Humility was described in the single-player games as the foundation of the Virtues. Without it, the other Virtues will of necessity fall into Pride, and become meaningless. The demon attacks on the city of Magincia during the fall of 2007, based on events in the single player games, were a form of punishment for the city's Pride. For another example of the importance of Humility as expressed within UO, see the article on the Shield of Recognition.

Lord British was an NPC. The character was the first King, and indeed the founder, of Britannia, and the inventor of the Virtue system. Initially, this character was played in-game by Richard Garriott, who is the creator of Ultima Online, and the creator of the single-player games upon which UO is based. (See Ultima Prime.) Lord British is currently gone from the game, having taken a powerful artifact to the Ethereal Void to guard it against Minax.

History
Lord British's history begins even before Ultima Prime. A person from what you or I would call the real world, by the name of Cantabrigian British, found somehow found a way into an enchanted realm of orcs, kings, elves, goblins, and "bobbits" (similar to Tolkein's hobbits, but with the first letter changed). He ended up becoming a King of an island nation, 1 of 4 such island nations in this strange, magical world.

This world was threatened by an evil mage named Mondain. Lord British used powerful magics and summoned forth a "Stranger," who became known as the Avatar, from his former world. In this strange new world, the Avatar found his true potential, grew in strength and wisdom and knowledge, and ended up killing Mondain. To do so he had to shatter Mondain's Gem of Immortality, and the shattering of the gem created a great number of parallel universes, which we in UO know as Shards.

At this point, the histories of Ultima Prime and UO diverged. In all the UO shards, Lord British consolidated many of the peoples and kingdoms under his wise, benevolent rule, and the unified country was known as Britannia.

Lord British's Reign
In the past, the NPCs of UO consistently, and with apparent sincerity, discussed their love of and respect for their King, which added to the fiction that the realm was well-governed and that Lord British was a benevolent ruler. These ranged from the respectable townsfolk to the gypsy vagabonds who roamed the countryside. Save for the Player Killer problem, there was for the most part every reason to go along with this fiction and view Lord British as a ruler both benevolent and efficient. Though the Kingdom was, well, a Kingdom, and not a Democracy, there were aspects of Democracy present, in the way Lord British listened to his subjects, and in the way his rule was tempered somewhat by a Council, which would eventually become the Britannian Council or Ruling Council or Royal Council, which would come to rule the Kingdom in Lord British's stead after his departure.

Lord British's military chief was the famous Dupre, and his court wizard was the famous Nystul. The seat of government was Castle Britannia, also known as Castle Britain, which was located in the western part of the capital City of Britain.

Lord British and Nystul, facing an invasion from Mondain's former lover Minax and her innumerable evil minions, created a mirror universe called Trammel using powerful magics, renaming the old land Felucca and largely abandoning it save for Dupre's off-stage participation in the Faction wars. Lord British's abandoning of the old realm is hands down the most-often question decision he made as ruler of Britannia.

Of Order, Chaos, Virtue, and Blackthorn
Lord British's most enduring legacy is probably the creation of the complex Virtue system. (See the appropriate article for more details. The Virtue system was also sometimes known as the Order system.

One day, a noble in Lord British's court, a good friend of British named Blackthorn, overheard a conversation between British and the Time Lord, a conversation also overheard by Sherry the Mouse. The contents of this conversation are described elsewhere, but the result was that Blackthorn created an alternative moral system that came to be known as Chaos. Whereas Order and Virtue stressed, well, order and virtue, Chaos stressed individual rights and individual freedoms.

The two noblemen continued to play chess together, while their more fanatical followers fought and slaughtered one another in the streets (as part of the Chaos/Order PvP system).

Lord British's First Departure, and the Consequences
Lord British vanished from the realm, for reasons that were never disclosed. In his place, the Council ruled. Despite Blackthorn's philosophical adherence to equality and freedom, in his heart he was an arrogant aristocrat. Blackthorn harbored deep resentment against British for not naming Blackthorn as his successor, leading him to an alliance with the evil entity known as Exodus, and with the Juka. These 3 parties waged a savage, brutal war against Britannia, which was eventually repelled by the players, under the nominal leadership of Dawn.

Some time later, with Lord British still absent, Blackthorn, without any help from the Juka or Exodus, launched an assault on the City of Yew, during which he was slain by Dawn.

Some time during Lord British's first absence, the out-of-character reason for the absence was revealed, on 30 March 2000: Richard Garriott had left OSI.

Lord British's Return
Off-stage, some kind of bargain was struck between Richard Garriott and the company he founded, leading to Lord British's return shortly after the release of the Age of Shadows expansion. During this time, British was not played by Garriott.

Lord British's return was designed to be, and was, temporary. Lord British eventually left, again, to take a powerful artifact (said to be shards of the Gem of Immortality that powered Mondain) into the Ethereal Void, which would secure it beyond permanently Minax's grasp.

Some weeks before his departure, Lord British held a memorial service for Blackthorn, wherein British stated, among other things, that he was abandoning his goal of unifying the Shards under the Virtues. And thus, Blackthorn effectively "won" the Order/Chaos conflict, in death.

The British character has appeared in other games, played by Garriott.

After British's Departure
The Royal Council ruled the realm for a number of years, until the ascension of the evil Casca, who became Britannia's second monarch. Casca was succeeded by Dawn, the same woman who had killed Blackthorn years before.

Trivia
{| border="0"
| rowspan="5" valign="top"|
| valign="top"|
*&nbsp;
| valign="top"|During a speech on August 8, 1997, Lord British was killed. It was during UO's beta version when Lord British was killed by a player. The character Rainz has just stolen a firewall scroll and used it on the wall where Lord British (controlled at the time by Richard Garriott himself) and Lord Blackthorn stood.
|-
|
|While Blackthorn was unharmed as he stood directly in the flames of the scroll spell, Lord British dropped dead upon entering the flames. It appears that Garriott forgot to turn on his "invulnerable" flag.
|-
|
|Rainz was allegedly banned, for this and other naughty things he did during the beta test. Garriott also challenged his killer to a rematch in his more recent game project, "Tabula Rasa." So far as anyone knows, the challenged never responded, and that game is now (March 2009) dead.
|-
| valign="top"|
*&nbsp;
|| This event was used in the fiction for the Royal Leggings of Embers artifact.
|-
| valign="top"|
*&nbsp;
|| Killing Lord British was often a built-in puzzle in the Ultima single-player games.
