“Oh. Well then, in my professional opinion, this dragon has fleas.”</i>

As ferocious as your tamed pet may be, at some point you may find yourself in a situation where a beloved pet is hurt, poisoned or both. With an investment in the Veterinary skill, you can heal most any ailment your pet may face.

Although creatures can be sustained to some extent by magical spells, a well trained vet can heal larger amounts of damage at greater speed. Like Stable Masters, a player character vet is capable of resurrecting dead pets.

Veterinary also counts towards your total stable slot limit.

Dexterity no longer effects the speed of your Veterinary skill. Vetting bandages take 2 seconds regardless of healer's stats.

See Pet Training for more information on training your pets

See the Pets section for more detailed information on your pets and how to control them

See Pet Guide for a comparison of high level hunting pets

Pet Healing
In order to heal creatures you must use a pile of Bandages on them. Your Healing and Anatomy skills have no influence here, Veterinary and Animal Lore are used instead. As these two skills rise the amount of damage healed increases as does your chance to cure/resurrect if need be.

* 60 Veterinary and 60 Animal Lore to have a chance to cure a creature's Poison. You must be standing within two tiles of it.
* 80 Veterinary and 80 Animal Lore to have a chance to Resurrect a bonded pet. You must be standing directly beside it.

Here is a useful tool which will determine chance to and amount healed: Pacific Ranger's Council Veterinary Calculator

Training
* 0 - 30: Train at a NPC Stablemaster.
* 30 - 60: Heal creatures.
You can get two weak creatures like deer or cows, have them attack each other, and then heal them. They do little damage to each other but you still get skill gains. You must be in a guild if you do this in trammel. You can do it in your own house.

If you don't have Animal Lore the only way to train to 100 or higher is by healing. Otherwise you can continue below.
* 60 - 80: Cure a poisoned creature (need 60 Animal Lore).
* 80 - 120: Resurrect a dead pet but do not press OK.2) You need 80 Animal Lore to resurrect a pet.

Notice that a confirmation gump will pop up only when the pet is resurrected by other people, so someone else's pet is required for this trick.

Seeds are small items that can be used for growing Plants via Gardening. They each weigh one stone and can be stacked.

There are two factors that determine a plant: variety and color. Varieties are then grouped into roughly 4 classes: classical, bonsai, peculiar and fragrant and oddities.

Seeds with particular color and varieties are initially gained as loot from certain creatures, but most varieties and colors are grown by breeding multiple generations of plants.

Certain older or bugged seeds that do not stack can be made stackable with use of the Gardener's Toolbox.

Classical Breedable Plants
Certain creatures drop Plain, Red, Blue or Yellow seeds. In early times, seeds obtained via combat used to produce plants of one of three varieties:

* Ferns
* Campion Flowers
* Tribarrel Cacti

Currently tribarrel cacti seeds are replaced by random seeds, which now include all classical varieties as well as (flowery) cactus oddity and vanilla oddity. However, two thirds of seed drops are still either campion flowers or ferns.

Such seeds will be named according to their color (eg "Red Seed"). There are several ways to obtain descriptive seeds (eg "Red Tribarrel Cactus Seed"):

* If a plant is grown and then bred with itself, it will produce descriptive seeds of the same type.
* If a seed is dropped into a seed box. its variety is automatically identified.
* Poppies dust can be used to identify the variety of a seed as well.

Breeding different combinations of these seeds together can produce more colors and plant varieties. Any plant that provides seeds can produce a total of eight over it's lifetime.

The initial starting seeds are dropped by:
* Boglings
* Bog Things

Breeding Table
There are 17 types of classical breedable varieties:

CampionsLine BreakFlowers
Poppies
Snowdrop
Bulrushes
Lillies
Pampas Grass
Rushes
ElephantLine BreakEar Plant
Fern
Ponytail Palm
Small Palm
Century Plant
Water Plant
Snake Plant
Prickly PearLine BreakCactus Plant
BarrelLine BreakCactus Plant
TribarrelLine BreakCactus Plant

This order of appearance is useful for identifying the breed of the next generation. If you breed two plants of varieties in this table, the next generation will be the variety of the middle one.

* Example 1. If you cross-pollinate campion flowers and fern, the middle one between these two varieties is lilly
* Example 2. If you cross-pollinate elephant ear plant and water plant, there is no exact middle one because there are even number of varieties inbetween. In this case, the next generation will be either ponytail palm or small palm, equally likely.

Often this table is presented in L-shaped manner:

Resource Growing Plants
Some plants produce resources which can be harvested via the Plant Resource GUMP. Up to eight units can be harvested from any given plant.

Green Thorns, which produce various random effects, are produced by Bright Green plants of these types:
* Snake Plants
* Barrel Cacti

Red Leaves, which lock the contents of books, are produced by Bright Red plants of these types:
* Ponytail Palms
* Elephant Ear Plants
* Century Plants

Orange Petals, which provide high levels of poison resistance, are produced by Bright Orange plants of these types:
* Pampas Grasses
* Poppies
* Bulrushes

Cocoa Pulp, which is used as a Cooking ingredient, is produced by Cocoa Trees.

Poppies Dust, which is used to ID unnamed seeds, is produced by the "peculiar" style of poppies.

Flax Flowers produce bales of cotton and the cypress trees produce bark fragments.

Mutant Plants
Mutants are grown from specially colored seeds, but cannot be bred and do not produce more. There are 2 ways of obtaining mutant seeds.

1st Way. They are typically obtained by completing the Naturalist Quest.

* If you investigate 4 egg nests, they come in aqua, pink and magenta. If you also complete investigation of the secret egg nests, they come in black, white and fire red.
* Aqua, pink, magenta and fire seeds always come in classical breedable variety, (flowery) cactus oddity and vanilla oddity.
* Black and white seeds always come in peculiar varieties.

2nd Way. Any plant that can produce seeds (aside from the Cocoa Tree) also has a chance of producing black or white mutants instead of the color they normally would. Such seeds are very rare.

Bonsai Plants
With the advent of Ultima Online: Samurai Empire, certain creatures in the Tokuno Islands have a chance of dropping special Bonsai seeds. The seed name corresponds to the names listed below.
For example, an uncommon bonsai comes from an uncommon seed. There are eight varieties:
* Common Bonsai Tree (also available in green)
* Uncommon Bonsai Tree (also available in green)
* Rare Bonsai Tree (also available in green)
* Exotic Bonsai Tree
* Exceptional Bonsai Tree

All forms are dropped by:

* Bake Kitsune
* Deathwatch Beetle
* Fan Dancer
* Hiryu

* Kappa
* Lesser Hiryu
* Oni
* Rune Beetle

* Yamandon
* Yomotsu Elder
* Yomotsu Priest
* Yomotsu Warrior

Peculiar Plants
Peculiar seeds began appearing with Publish 55 and can grow 17 new plant varieties (one of which comes in two facings, for a total of 18). These plants cannot be cross-pollinated and with the exception of Vanilla (began appearing with Publish 76, it can produce seeds and can also produce Vanilla as a resource), do not produce new seeds nor resources. Instead, they are only dropped by certain monsters.

It was initially decided that no coloured Peculiar plants would be available, but due to a bug which caused the Naturalist Quest to produce nothing but coloured Peculiar Cactus plants, Publish 56 will make both standard and peculiar plants available from the same quest.

The seeds are divided into five groups based on the monsters that drop their seeds. For example, if you want to get a twisted Cypress Tree you must kill monsters from the second group. As the seeds are unlabeled either have to wait until the seed reaches the 7th stage of growth or use the resource poppies dust to identify the seed type. Assuming you harvested from the correct monster, you have a 20% change of receiving the seed in Group 1 you are after and a 25% chance for the seeds in all Groups 2 to 4.

Cocoa Trees (Fragrant Seeds)
Fragrants seeds began appearing with Publish 55 and are used to grow the Cocoa Tree, which in turn can not be cross-pollinated.

Whenever a creature would drop a Peculiar seed, there is a chance a Fragrant seed will be dropped instead. They are hence collected from the same creatures but at a lower drop rate. Unlike peculiar plants, they do grow further Cocoa Tree Seeds.

In addition they produce Cocoa Pulp, a consumable resource used by cooks as a key ingredient to create chocolate confection preparations, namely Cocoa Butter and Cocoa Liquor.

The Chocolatiering branch of the Cooking skill was introduced with Publish 50 on St. Valentine's Day 2008 but cocoa pulp and cocoa trees did not appear until Publish 55, nearly 6 months later.

Ungrowable Plants
Some plants are available as decorative items outside of the Gardening system.

Available during the Spring Cleaning 2008 event:
* Bamboo
* Yucca Tree

* Rose in a Vase
* Potted Plants

Rare Plants
Plants have undergone name changes and as such original plants could be considered rare. Original plants have the name Decorative Plant and do not list the color or type of plant. The second generation of naming included the plant color. The current and last naming system now includes color and type.
* First generation. Generic name only.
* Second generation. Color is included.

Kegs can store up to 100 potions of the same type. For every potion added, their weight increases by four fifths of a stone (up to a maximum of 100 stones). They may be dyed with a Furniture Dye Tub, which is often helpful for coloring the kegs to match the potion type inside.

There was a bug that potions removed directly by use of the Gardening display window did not decrease the weight of a keg. This was fixed in Publish 75.
The contextual menu option to entirely dump the contents of a keg so that it may be re-used has not yet been implemented.
"I almost caught a fish this big! But it, um, got away."

Vast oceans surround Britannia on all sides, and for centuries men and women have earned their keep fishing the coastal waters. In addition to an endless supply of fish, those skilled in fishing have been known to pull forth treasure, and danger, from the deep.

In order to fish, you must not be mounted or flying and you should be holding a Fishing Pole in one hand.

Training
{{Training
interval1=0 - 30
training1=Buy from NPC Fisher
interval2=30 - 50
training2=Fish in shallow water. Stand on the shore of islands such as Moonglow or Haven and walk around.
interval3=50 - 75
training3=Fish off of a dock, a few tiles from the shore. As your skill rises, fish a little bit further and further out. A Crystal Ball of Knowledge comes in very handy to help gauge the best distance from where to fish.
interval4=75 - 100
training4=Fish in deep water (gains after 85.0 are only possible in in deep water). Deep water requires the use of a boat to reach. Get on one and sail around. Be prepared to fight Sea Serpents.
interval5=80 - 100
training5=Alternatively, as the method of DJ, after you hit 80, you can use SOS's and a Fishing Scroll of Alacrity. When you sail to the SOS coordinates, and use the alacrity scroll before fishing for the SOS, you'll get decent gains by pulling up the random loot before the chest. If you keep runebooks with close coordinates (NE, SE, NW, SW high numbers, and low numbers) and can dry dock your boat quickly and recall to a closer coordinate, you can get a few SOS's in before your alacrity scroll ends. Note that after around 95, it's slow and repetitive.
interval7=100 - 120
training7=You have to have High Seas to do the Professional Fisher Quest to get/use the 105-120 fishing scrolls. If your lucky enough to get a fishing scroll you will be on your way to legendary. You will spend long hours out to sea with slow gains the whole way. To pass the time do the fish monger quests (requires High Seas).
}}

When a fishing spot has been "used up" a message will appear over the character's head (Legacy Client) or in their journal (Enhanced Client) "The fish don't seem to be biting here". This means no more fish can be had at that spot; however, gains can still be had in that location. To resume catching fish, move to another location at least 8 steps away.

Crystal Ball of Knowledge
If you have a Crystal Ball of Knowledge, turn it on and try out different fishing locations until the ball reports "Optimal" difficulty. It will let you know exactly where the optimal spots are. The distance is about one step further away from land every 5 skill points. Once you reach 95.1, it will only ever say "Easy" even in deep water.

Expect to catch around 3,800 fish to go from 50 to 100 skill(as well as plenty of nets, treasure maps, white pearls, delicate scales and footwear) while using the crystal ball under optimal conditions. If you just go straight to deep water after 85 without using a crystal ball, you may unknowingly be fishing in slightly over-challenging areas, slowing the rate of skillgain.

Items
The following items can be fished up:
Footwear
The true horror of fishing, these hordes of footwear will fill your backpacks up quickly. It is suggested to simply drop them as they just don't make any real gold. Though they are useful if you are planning on starting up a cobblary. Your pet goat will also enjoy the taste of these footwear.
align="center" valign="top" |
Treasure chests are fished up by the use of a Waterstained SOS from a Message in a Bottle. They are the only treasure chest that can be taken and used for home storage. These chests will carry a treasure rating of 1 - 3.
align="center" valign="top" |
When used it will turn into a Waterstained SOS . Or if you're lucky it will turn into an Ancient SOS , which about 1 in 25 does.
align="center" valign="top" |
Treasure Map
You can fish up a level 1 or level 2 treasure map that is for a land adventure of very easy standards. Most new players can handle the spawns from a level 1 treasure map.
Special Fishing Net
These can be found as loot on sea serpents or in fished up treasure chests. When used, the net appears to throw out many fishing lines and a set of nasty monsters will spawn, consisting of Water Elementals, Sea Serpents, Deep Sea Serpents and Krakens. There is a chance for it to spawn in one of the 14 special colors:
Big Fish
A rare fish that one can use a Taxidermy Kit on to make a nice looking trophy which may be mounted in a player's home. When caught, a big fish lands at the fisher's feet and not in their backpack. Their weight is random, the heavier it is, the more rare. Both weight and the fisherman's name will be displayed on the trophy, but only if the fish weighed more than 20 stones.

4x4 Fishing
While fishing on a boat or on a pier you can do what is called 4x4 fishing. This is where you target 4 spaces to the NE, SE, SW, and NW of your character while fishing. You can farm each of these locations for quite a while before having to move on again. Remember, you will need to move 12 spaces instead of just 8 to begin fishing again.
