"Fear me! I am a master swordsman! I dance with my finely polished blade! I swing grand arcs above my head! I twirl my sword with grace and... ouch!"

The fine art of Swordsmanship is a skill to be admired. Employing neither the wallop-on-the-head approach of the mace fighter, nor the pinging, poking thrust of the fencer, the swordsman knows the near-silent whistle of polished metal slicing the air — and other, less vaporous things…

The benefit from increased levels of swordsmanship is a greater chance to hit your target. Other melee factors, like damage and swing speed, are governed by other statistics, in this instance strength and dexterity, respectively. This skill also counts towards your ability to perform Special Moves.

Swordsmanship also benefits from a Mastery: Warrior's gifts, Onslaught and Focused Eye.

Training
From 0 - 30 skill you should buy from the Warrior Guildmaster. After that you need to hold a sword in hand and hit opponents. For more details on training Swordsmanship or other melee skills visit the Melee Training Guide page.

Weapons
The standard sword class of weapons are primarily designed to chop and slice opponents. As it offers the largest range of weapons to choose from by far, the Power Scrolls required to become a Legendary Swordsman are considered extremely valuable.

Another exclusive bonus to Swordsmen is the Axe weapon class. These add an additional Damage Increase bonus dependant on your character's Lumberjacking skill, though this is typically considered too low to be worth pursuing.

Note that as the Tinkering skill has no Runic Tools, the items it produces are seldom used as primary weapons in combat. On the other hand, the only* swords which may be used with the Poisoning skill are created by Tinkers (the Butcher Knife and the Cleaver).

*Note: ANY weapon can have poison applied to it with poison mastery, and ANY weapon can use Injected Strike.

tocright
“A wise warrior fights with both weapon and intellect.”

“An even wiser warrior fights with a shield as well.”

Parrying is used to completely block melee blows or archery shots from opponents. In usual practise you must equip a Shield in order to parry - Which type doesn't make a difference (unless the item has an additionally listed Defense Chance Increase bonus).

If you fail to parry, a shield offers no protection aside from any Item Properties it might have displayed (such as Resistances).

As a character gains in Parry as well as Bushido, the system changes somewhat: Your chance to block with a shield falls, and instead you gain the ability to parry with a sword. An additional bonus is granted if the weapon is double handed.

This skill also counts towards your ability to perform Special Moves.
Parrying also benefits from a Mastery: Shield Bash, Bodyguard and Heightened Senses.
Training
Superior Training Method: 0 - 120 Skill

Naked Training of Parry is easy and inexpensive. The outdated guides below are not to be followed.
0 - 120 in a few hours:

Step 1 (Optional): Train Resist Magic to 100 at New Haven with Spectral Spell Binders. They cast nothing but debuff spells, and don't harm you from a distance. This step only sets your resists to 40/70 when naked. You can use a suit to achieve 40 or better, though it will be destroyed.

Step 2: Pay 400 gold in New Haven to the Ninjitsu trainer or Necromancy trainer, as you'll be using cat form or horrific beast form for hp regeneration.

Step 3: Buy 10 - 15 Shields.

Step 4: Go to the sheep pens in Yew and flag combat on all eight of the sheep, letting them surround you while you're in cat form and only holding a shield. They will gain wrestling as they attack you, so they will keep up with your parry skill, taking you all the way to 70 from 0 ( on Siege and Mugen ), or 120 from 40 on production shards. The sheep may begin to start hitting harder as they train. Don't be afraid to kill them all and reset the spawn to weaker sheep.

Note: If your main skill is wrestling, then you need to hold a weapon in your hands that you aren't trained with. This allows the sheep to hit you more often, and gives parry more chances to trigger.

Old Training Method 1:

While your Parrying ability can be improved during your day-to-day adventuring, it can takes months upon months to reach Grandmaster (let alone the higher levels). By dedicating time specifically to the skill it can reach its peak within a few hours. If you wish to also train Bushido it is advised to train Parry first.

Put on a suit of armor to get as much Physical Resistance as possible. As you'll be taking plenty of damage, Durability is a factor - either bring several sets of expendable items or items with the Self Repair property (three or above is excellent). The Virtue Armor Set is great for situations such as this, though it's quite possible to train wearing no armor at all. Reactive Armor can be used to gain a small bonus for "free".
Be sure to arm a One-Handed Weaponweapon that you have 0 weapon skill in aswell as a Shield, that way more attacks get directed to the shield.

You'll require 80 Dexterity to parry to maximum effect.

Collect several shields of any type (keeping in mind these will also be taking a large hit to durability) and find some sparring partners.

The goal here is to receive incoming melee blows as fast as possible. Every time a creature would land a strike against you, you have a chance to parry (and therefore gain). The more Dexterity your creature of choice has the faster it'll be able to attack you - The more Wrestling ability the creature has, the more likely it'll land an accurate blow. You should, of course, avoid wearing armor with the Defense Chance Increase property, though you might find Hit Point Regeneration invaluable.

Sheep are a traditional choice (as they deal negligible damage), while Spectral Spellbinders will offer faster strikes (and impressive Resisting Spells gains). Hinds are again more powerful, though keep in mind you'll gain little skill while dead. Be sure to stay out of combat mode after engaging your targets to avoid killing them.

At the most you'll be able to have nine creatures attacking you at once (eight surrounding you and one in the same tile as your character). Be sure to have a sustainable method of keeping your Hit Points above zero; bring hundreds of Bandages or cast healing spells (remembering to prepare Protection first). Of course if you can find another player to stay with you for support, you'll find it far easier to stay alive (and sane). Or if you have Necromancy you can cast Horrific Beast and your heath will regenerate at 2hp/s.

Old Training Method 2:

0-85 Have access to your house or a friends house readily available and shield with at least 3 Self Repair. Now, find any low level animal (sheep, dogs, cats, etc. I prefer to use hinds) and aggro it towards you. This will mean going into war mode and double clicking said creature. Before the creature gets to attacking you, make sure of these things: 1) You are standing on the stairs of the house in front of the door. (this is so that you can move one tile away and heal if need be without the creature following you) 2) Have your shield equipped and NOT a weapon. 3) A full HP regen suit helps, but always makes sure you have a guaranteed method of healing. Note that this part is extremely important because it will keep you from dying and having to find a healer.

85-100 Use the exact same setup as above, however, switch out to an ogre or a troll in order to start getting gains. It is more important now to have a method of healing than it was before because these can hit much harder than a wolf can and often do. Remember that the doorway is there in the event that you need to step away for a few seconds and heal.

Nightstalkerhttps://www.uoguide.com/index.php?title=Boats&diff=69401Boats2019-04-02T02:59:31Z
Nightstalker: /* Practical Uses */

tocright
Boats allow players to travel across the seas of Britannia. They are subject to decay in the same way that houses are, and will sink if left alone too long (about 5 days). The small boats are much smaller and cheaper than Galleons but may not be armed with cannons.

Buying
Small boats may be purchased from players or NPC Shipwrights in most towns, usually ones near oceans or large bodies of water. The Tokuno Ships and Gargoyle Ships can be purchased in deed form only from the Shipwrights at the Sea Market. The Orc Ship is obtained as a reward from the Professional Bountyhunter Quest. NPC Shipwrights will always sell boats in deed form, a ship deed indicating the boat size and type(see below).

Players may sell boats as either deeds or, much more commonly, a Ship Model, which appears as a miniature ship. Never purchase a boat in any other format including "handing you the keys" at dockside in exchange for payment as it's likely a player perpetrating a scam.

As a quick side-note, there is also a scam involving players selling a miniature ship called A Ship Model which is actually just a ship named Model which has been dry-docked into the miniature ship. The true rare item known as a Ship Model does exist but be sure to denote the lack of a preceding A in the item name.

Ship Types
There are eleven types of boats.

Classic Ships
Classic ships have been around since initial release. They have the same speed and storage capacity in their holds. The only real difference is in size, with the mediums being two tiles longer than the smalls and the larges two tiles longer than that. The size difference allows for a bit easier maneuverability of the smaller ships through tight areas. A dragon's head carving adorns the prow of the various sizes of dragon ships while the regular ships lack it, merely a decor preference.
Galleons
Some commands may be spoken in combination together, such as forward left or back right and capitalization is not necessary as the tiller man never finished school and couldn't care less.

Mouse
Mouse control of the boats is introduced with the Ultima Online: High Seas booster pack. To control the boat using the mouse, double-click on the ship's wheel and you enter the mouse driving mode with the system message:
:You are now piloting this vessel.

To exit the mouse driving mode, double-click on yourself. The ship’s owner can also seize the ship's control from another passenger at any time.

Security
Rowboat
A rowboat can only be boarded by the owner, players partied with the owner, or in the same guild as owner. However, if someone hops in a reverse gate to a rowboat they will be allowed to board it.

Classic Ships
Small boats are secured using the boat key, which each player is given a pair of every time a boat is placed in the water. One key goes into the player's pack while the other is placed automatically in their bankbox. When a boat first enters the water, the plank, or gangway, on each side of the boat is locked. Players use their boat key on the plank to unlock and lock the it, allowing for ingress and egress. When the plank is unlocked, it can be extended by double-clicking on it, allowing anyone to enter or exit the boat, done by double-clicking the plank or simply walking on or off it if it is close enough to land, such as docks.

When both planks are locked, no one may come board the boat via the planks. The exception is if someone has one of the boat keys, which then allows them to use Recall or Sacred Journey upon the key as if it were a marked rune.

Keeping the boat secure is vitally important when sailing in pirate-infested waters to avoid being boarded by either murderers or thieves.

To avoid people being trapped on boats against their will, a plank may be double-clicked to temporarily extend it for exiting purposes only, even if it is locked.

Keeping the boat key secure is also important as anyone with one of the keys can command the tiller man as well as dry-dock the boat and keep it, even if they were not originally the person who bought or placed the boat in the water. Boat keys in player backpacks can be a juicy target of thieves.

Galleons
Much like houses, players can be granted access to the Galleons if it is set to private. To do this, left click once on the player you want to grant access to and choose Grant Access from the context menu. Note that once a player has been granted access to your boat, they will be able to drive it using the wheel. However, they will not be able to give commands to the Pilot. Also, once someone is on mouse-driving mode, the Pilot will not function until the mode is disabled. To enter a galleon, you should double-click on one of the mooring lines located on each side of the boat to board.

Boat access list guide. As above, after granting access to the ship, one can adjust how that player can interact with your ship.

1) Click on pilot and choose Security Settings

2) Click on player, and choose Grant Access

3) You will see players name, now choose their Access List Status

4) In this example we chose Captain

5) Now looking at the Access List we can see who is granted access and their level.

The Hold
Classic Ships
Each type of boat has a hold that players can store items in, up to 400 stones or 125 items, whichever comes first. The hold cannot be locked, so anyone able to get on-board the boat can access the hold. The hold is located at the front of the boat inside the hatch. When a boat sinks due to decay, any items stored in the hold will simply float motionless in a pile on top of the water where the boat sank free to be salvaged by any passers-by.

Galleons
Depending on the boat, the players can store items in, between 12,000 to 28,000 stones or 125 items, whichever comes first.

Dry Docking
Since boats are an expensive investment, one of their great features is they may be stored safely when not in use. The hold must be empty, no one aboard, the decks clear of any debris or corpses, both planks locked and the anchor dropped before a boat may be dry-docked. Once those conditions are met, a player holding the boat key simply double-clicks the tiller man to dry-dock the boat, at which point it disappears from the water and goes into the player's pack as a miniature ship with the name of the boat (or description if the boat was unnamed). Miniature ship models are blessed and cannot be stolen.

Previously, players would dry-dock their ship with a Harbormaster and receive a Ship Claim Ticket. They could then hand the ticket back to the Harbormaster to reclaim their vessel. When the dry-docking process was instituted, Ship Claim Tickets became an unforseen yet valuable collectible rare item.

Combat
Classic Ships
Small boats are unarmed, but players experienced in the ways of the sea and with a good knowledge of sailing can easily outclass playes who are inexperienced in sailing. Boats can be used to box in, block, bottleneck and stop other boats. Much of this can be done with skillful maneuvering using combinations of sailing commands as well as having an intimate knowledge of the nearby coastlines, islands and even server lines. Some spells have unanticipated effects at sea, especially on moving targets.

Seaborne murderers in Felucca, or pirates, favor Poison Field and Fire Field spells against their prey as there is little room to run around on the deck of a boat. Additionally, the seas of Sosaria can be desolate of other people making finding help or even a resurrection difficult and time-consuming. Absent-mindedly leaving a plank unlocked and being boarded by surprise is often a sealed fate at the hands of pirates. Some pirates will even set traps of piles of gold or items on drifting boats, hoping to lure a passing player closer out of curiosity. If one is not itching for a usually one-sided fight, the best advice is steer clear of enclosed coastlines or opportunities that seem too good to be true. Many a miner at sea in Felucca with hopes of easy double ore stacked high on the deck, or adventurers seeking a treasure chest on that facet provide a fine day's pickings for pirates.

Galleons
Galleons can be armed with Cannons to damage other ships, creatures or players. They also take damage but can be repaired.

Ship Repairing
Galleons have durability and can be damaged by Merchant Ships, Pirate Ships or other player ships in Felucca. Permanent Repairs can only be performed when the ship is near land or at the Sea Market. Emergency Repairs can be performed temporarily to remove the scuttled status and may be done anywhere. There are a total of five damage conditions:

{| class="wikitable"

These repair requirements are for a non-crafter character. Carpentry skill reduces the amount of boards needed while Tailoring skill reduces the amount of cloth needed. At GM Carpentry/Tailoring, the amount of required resources are roughly reduced by half. Note that the Jack of all Trades ability of Humans is valid in these calculations.

Ship Refreshing and Decay, Lighthouse House Addon (Veteran Reward)
Galleons decay similar to houses. In order to refresh a ship one needs to double-click the mooring lines. This refreshes the ship even when out at sea. If you neglect to refresh your ship it will vanish after 13 days, going through the following decay phases:
* Slightly Worn - 3 days
* Somewhat Worn - 3 days
* Fairly Worn - 3 days
* Greatly Worn - 3 days
* In Danger of Collapsing - 1 day

Recovery Option through a Lighthouse
Publish 85 introduced a new House Addon: Lighthouse. They recover any ship that are linked to the lighthouse. Rowboats are not being recovered.

Ship Tracking
Ship Tracking was introduced with the Ultima Online: High Seas booster pack. The command Start Tracking will activate the tracking mode where you will see arrows pointing to up to five nearby ships. Ship tracking tracks all boats whether they're friend and foe. To stop tracking say the command Stop Tracking. Note that you must be within 200 tiles of another ship for ship tracking to work. Also, ship tracking does not seem to work on all ships, just Galleons. Additionally, there is currently a bug where ship tracking arrows will point to ship models locked down in player homes.

Practical Uses
Aside from their primary purpose as a means to travel upon the seas, boats can be employed in many other useful roles.

* Useful for boat mining as the miner merely sails along a rocky coastline mining the whole way and dumping ore on the deck for later smelting.
* Invaluable for fishers in gaining skill at higher levels in deep water as well as retrieving a Message in a Bottle.
* Can be used as a sort of mini-fort in treasure hunting. After a chest is dug up and the guardians appear, players will retreat to fight from on-board the ship, keeping the monsters on land at arm's length.
* Players participating in Trade Deals use boats as a way to travel while avoiding moongates, to ensure the full reward amount offered by the Trade Minister.
* For completing the Professional Fisher Quests and Professional Bountyhunter Quests introduced with the Ultima Online: High Seas.
* And of course the heart and soul of Pirating, by which murderers take to the seas in search of adventure, booty and unlucky victims. This use gain more importance with the High Seas booster pack.

Formerly, boats were heavily used in the 8x8 method of skill gain. Changes to game mechanics and the way skills were gained removed this method, thus leaving the seas desolate to some degree.

Dread Horn is a corrupted unicorn, the Peerless boss of the Twisted Weald dungeon. He is the easiest peerless for a Sampire. In a group any template would do as long as you have a tank and one player focuses on curing. Once you have some experience, you will find that getting the keys is more difficult than the fight itself. Occasionally, Dread Horn teleports people to himself and poisons them. A fast Arch Cure caster or a crate of greater cure potions will come in handy, since Dread loves to poison everyone. Orange petals do not work -- Dread's poison is too strong (level 6?). He also has a special ability which will reduce all your stats (strength, dexterity, intelligence) by 20, which can be difficult in combination with his magic attacks. This lasts 60 seconds. Having Resisting Spells is a boon in this instance.

Dread Horn's lair is in the Twisted Weald dungeon, past the twisty quicksand maze near Swoop.
Strategies
For groups of mages, pumping out endless Earth Elementals is a simple but effective way to beat Dread Horn. He will dispel some, but the elementals deal/take OK damage because of the armor/damage types, and their aggressive AI will usually keep Dread Horn from targeting the mages. Two mages with lots of Mana Regeneration should be able to cast enough elementals to take him down. Tamers will want to take pets with excellent poison resistance and good physical resistance, so as to reduce the amount of pet healing required. The constant poisoning can make it difficult to heal pets before they die. The Cu Sidhe's ability to sometimes cure itself of poison can be helpful in this regard. Arctic Ogre Lords are also quite popular since they have 100% poison resist (this eliminates 60% of Dread Horn's melee damage).

Notes
His special ability that reduces your stats by 20 for 60 seconds does stack with curse, weaken, and feeblemind, which Dread Horn also sometimes uses. (Your stats will never be reduced below the minimum of 10 points, however.) Resisting Spells helps with the stat loss from curse but not with the special ability.

Keys
* Six keys are required: Blighted Cotton, Thorny Briar, Gnaw's Fang, Irk's Brain, Lissith's Silk, and Sabrix's Eye. All the keys spawn with a 7 day countdown timer, which should be plenty of time to collect them all.
* Drop the keys on the small statue called "The Statue of the Fey" in the southeast corner of the Twisted Weald dungeon (i.e. the swamp area past the desert).
* When you have done that, three Essence of the Wind will spawn in your back pack. These keys come with a 10-minute countdown timer, giving you a limited time to prepare your party for the final battle. Double click the master key to send you and your party to Dread Horn's island (located just to the west of the swamp area).
* Once Dread Horn spawns, your party has 2 hours to defeat Dread Horn, after which he will just disappear if you haven't killed him. You can depart the island by walking to the boat on the left-hand side.

No-Drop/No-Trade is an item property which denotes that the item cannot be traded via the trade window and cannot be removed from a character's backpack, unless it is to place the item in a Trash Barrel. According to MrTact, the No-Drop/No-Trade system was added, "specifically to keep the event items unique."

On the whole, No-Drop/No-Trade items are quest items. The items obtained during or for the completion of a quest were never intended to be used for any other purpose. Therefore, a character cannot drop or trade them.

The No-Trade property does not prevent items from being moved to another shard using Character Transfer Tokens. However, if an item is No-trade, it cannot be traded on the destination shard either.

Problems
Some players have reported that they cannot get rid of No-Drop/No-Trade items at all. MrTact says:
:"As for not being able to trash these items - that’s not how they’re supposed to work. If you encounter this situation, please email [mailto:uobugs@uo.com] with the details."

Players with items stuck in their character's backpack are advised to
* try completing the quest that originally awarded the item
* try to put the item in a trash barrel, and
* finally, page a GM to help.

Solution
You can drop No-Drop/No-Trade items from your pack if you have the stealing skill ( JOAT will work ).
* This is possible by exploiting the backpack's 125 item limit. To drop the item, you'll need to fill your backpack with items until you've reached 125 items in your pack.
* Next, prepare an item that you can successfully steal ( 1 stone ), and place it in a secured container that you have access to, a pack mule's pack, or a friends backpack ( If you're in the thieve's guild ).
* Target the item you intend to steal ( Arms Lore, Dye Tub, or anything that provides a targeting cursor ).
* You'll need to have the stealing skill set to a keystroke, as well as a "last target" macro set to a keystroke.
* Pick up the item you wish to drop on the floor, and hold it with the cursor.
* Press the key that is bound to your stealing skill, followed by the key set to "last target".
* If you successfully steal the item, your pack will be at the 125 limit again, and you will not be able to place the item on your cursor back into your pack, thereby causing it to fall on the floor.

Notes
* A survey of game forums indicate that complaints related to the No-Drop/No-Trade system are largely that it is unrealistic.
* The developers acknowledge that No-Drop/No-Trade is, " a pain for those who want to display these items in your house. This is a feature we can look at adding in the future."
If you successfully steal the item, your pack will be at the 125 limit again, and you will not be able to place the item on your cursor back into your pack, thereby causing it to fall on the floor.
* The developers acknowledge that No-Drop/No-Trade is, " a pain for those who want to display these items in your house. This is a feature we can look at adding in the future."
