8X8 was a great way to gain skills, in short, you got a boat, found a line that had no landmass, slow forward, cast spell find a place where you gain then move 8 tiles forward from that spot, it worked on land as well, I gained GM inscription by just moving in a 8x8 square.
In trying to fix the streakyness of the random number generater, the 8x8 method was removed.
Now you can just gain in one spot.
