Rate Over Time

Rate over Time (RoT) is the skill gain system used on the Siege Perilous and Mugen shards.

RoT doesn't kick in for a given skill until it reaches 70. Any skills above this range will be subject to the following rules:

  • Skills between 70.0 to 79.9 can gain 0.1 every 5 minutes (each) to a max of 5.0 per day (total).
  • Skills between 80.0 to 89.9 can gain 0.1 every 8 minutes (each) to a max of 4.0 per day (total).
  • Skills between 90.0 to 99.9 can gain 0.1 every 12 minutes (each) to a max of 3.0 per day (total).
  • Skills between 100.0 to 109.9 can gain 0.1 every 15 minutes (each) to a max of 3.0 per day (total).
  • Skills between 110.0 to 120.0 can gain 0.1 every 15 minutes (each) to a max of 2.0 per day (total).
  • 15 Statistics points can be gained per day.
  • The end of the RoT "day" is 8pm EST/1am GMT.

For example, say your Hiding skill is 75 (within the 70.0 to 79.9 range), and you gain 4.0 points in a given day. That's 80% of the maximum points you can gain for skills in that range (5.0), so if you have 76 points in Stealthing (which would be in the same range), you'll only be able to gain 1.0 point in that skill that day (20% of 5.0).

In addition to this, skill points gained in one range effect how many points can be gained in another (based on a percentage of the total allowable points gained per area).

For example, say your Hiding skill is 75, and you gain 2.5 points in a given day. That's 50% of the maximum points you can gain for skills in that range, so if you have 105 points in Stealthing (within the 100.0 to 109.9 range), you'll only be able to gain 1.5 points in that skill that day (50% of 3.0).

Given this, the fastest way to bring a given skill to it's maximum is to lock ALL other skills so only the desired ability can gain. However, this can be quite a test of patience - at the higher levels, getting all the RoT points for a single skill in a single day can take about six hours (twenty gains with a wait of fifteen minutes after each).

As the wait timer is on a "per skill" basis, it's far easier to train multiple skills at once. For example, if you cast a spell, you'll be exercising Magery, Evaluating Intelligence, then Meditation and Focus to replace the lost mana. Assuming each of these skills are over 110 and allowed to raise, you'll be able to get your total allowable RoT points (2.0) within about an hour (five gains each for four skills, with a wait of fifteen minutes after each).

Note that skills in the RoT ranges that are eligible for a gain WILL gain when you attempt to use them, regardless of whether you succeed that attempt or not. This means that skills which normally require "grinding" large amounts of resources to train can be done relatively cheaply, as you can potentially gain off every single attempt through good timing.
