Double-clicking the essence turns you into a Troll, Terathan Matriarch or Stone Harpy. While in this form monsters will not attack you unless they saw you transform or were attacking you prior. While in monster form you can see hidden souls which appear as red sparkles inside Anti-Virtue Dungeons.
Taking any type of damage will knock you out of monster form.
