Asuka is a Japanese shard and is named after an ancient kingdom in Japan dating from 530-710 CE which was based in a capital city of the same name. It was during the era of this kingdom that many important changes took place in Japan, including the arrival of Buddhism and the change of the name of the country from Wa to Nihon(which remains the modern derivative).
