Izumo is a Japanese shard and is named after the Japanese city of Izumo in Shimane prefecture. The city also has a famous shrine, named Izumo-taisha, which is known for being helpful to people in search of a mate. The name was chosen after a Japanese player poll was conducted with over 2,500 entries received.
Izumo shard opened October 1, 1999 as the 18th shard and was initially available to Japanese-regional players only.
Izumo opened to all UO players worldwide on December 1, 1999.
