THE VOLUNTEER COUNSELOR PROGRAM CHANGES

April 15, 1999

New Counselor Powers and Authority to Be Implemented In Bid to Improve Help Request Response Times

Beginning this week, the volunteer Counselor program will begin a complete revamp. The goal is to drastically reduce the time it takes us to respond to your Help requests.

To achieve this, active Counselors will now have more commands - and the authority to use them - to help solve some of the more common in-game problems. Examples include being able to move players who are "stuck' on the game map, and jailing disruptive or abusive players. These new abilities should take quite a bit of the load off the GMs and let them attend to the more intricate problems that sometimes develop.

You should begin to see Counselors trained in the new powers on duty late next week or early the week after. More will come on duty in the two to three weeks after that. Our hope is that, by May 15, at least two Counselors with the new powers will be on duty in each North American Shard at all times during the scheduled support hours. Currently, these hours are 3 PM to 1 AM local time. These two Counselors will be in addition to the GM on duty; in effect, trebling the previous coverage.

As part of the revamp, we're again taking applications for the Counselor program. We hope to recruit more great volunteers to help other players and greatly expand the total number of Counselors on duty per Shard, further reducing response times to Help calls. If you're interested in becoming a Counselor, check the web page for the new application and the Terms of Service for Counselors.

Warning: The requirements for new Counselor applicants have become far more strict. Please read the TOS-C carefully before applying. Three of the new requirements to gain access to the new Counselor powers are: Must commit to a schedule of three 2-hour shifts per week; Must be 25 years of age or older; Must attend and pass a 6 to 10-hour online training course. It will take some time to implement the new program on each shard; there are bound to be bumps and delays in the process. As we implement these new Counselor powers and expand the coverage during peak playing times, we ask for your patience and forbearance.

Best Regards, GM Kal El and The UO Player Support Team
