The term "avatar" refers to 2 distinct and very different things.
It is a term for the character the player plays within UO. This term is not used often in UO, but is more common in other games.
It is also a term deeply embedded in Ultima lore. "The Avatar" is the stranger that defeated Mondain. He is the embodiment of the Virtues and is said to return one day. Effectively he is a kind of "Christ Figure" in the Ultima mythology. In the single-player Ultima games upon which UO is based, he was the character under the player's control.
Several important UO NPCs, such as Dupre, Katrina, Geoffrey, Gweeno, and others, were companions of the Avatar in the single-player games.
