Runic Symbols have long been used in various Ultima games both to represent the words used in spells and as a substitute for the english alphabet. In Ultima Online they are primarily used for the former purpose and are rarely seen elsewhere.

The symbols used to represent Ultima's runes are taken from the ancient Norse alphabet, which also gave them seperate magical meanings (though this author is uncertain as to how closely the games match these).

Examples Of Use

Runes are usually seen in UO as the casting words of power used in Magery and Necromancy.

  • For example, the Poison spell:
Rune I.pngRune N.png
In Nox
Cause Poison

  • This is, of course, countered with Cure:
Rune A.pngRune N.png
An Nox
Negate Poison

Rune V.pngRune A.pngRune N.png
Vas An Nox
Great Negate Poison

  • A more convoluted demonstration is the Armageddon spell:
Rune V.pngRune K.pngRune A.pngRune M.pngRune I.pngRune C.pngRune H.pngRune T.png
Vas Kal An Mani In Corp Hur Tym
Great Summon Negate Life Cause Death Wind Time

On the back of the The Second Age handbook, this phrase is written in runic symbols:

The Incan monkey god peered through the leaves of the great book and saw the dawning of a new age - An age whose like has seldom been beheld by man.
