Publish 10 serves as the earliest publish whose publish number can be definitively determined. All publishes before this, starting with Publish 9 and going back to Publish 1 and before, have been painstakingly reconstructed through cross-referencing of dates and other information from various UO archives, fansites, and all available official Origin/EA communiqué.

All of the general publish information, including the actual publish content and the release dates of various publishes, are considered to be as accurate as possible; the possible inaccuracy lies only in the groupings of these publishes under their publish numbers. Publish 8, for instance, known as the Factions System Publish, may have been either Publish 8 or Publish 9, depending on whether what is currently considered as Publish 9 was itself a fully-numbered publish, or was merely a large update to the Factions System Publish. This would in turn move publishes such as Publish 5, the Renaissance Publish, to Publish 6, and so on.

Another possible source of inaccuracy lies in the fact that when one counts backwards through what could be considered to be large, numbered publishes, Publish 1 is reached long before the beginning of UO is reached. This could possibly indicate one of two things:

# The numbering of publishes began only with the move from owo.com to uo.com.

# Our current grouping of publishes before Publish 10 is inaccurate.

Any information regarding the grouping of the publishes from Publish 9 to the beginning of UO would be greatly appreciated, and as such information becomes available, the groupings in this section will be corrected and refined.

Publishes are changes to a Shard's programming to fix bugs or add content. Publishes may or may not be announced by the development team, depending on the type. A major game update will always be announced (i.e. Publish 25), however, publishes may also occur invisibly during a shard's maintenance to fix exploits and bugs.

Originally, major publishes were known simply by the date on which they were released, but in the time leading up to the announcement of UO:R, The Six Month Plan was announced. This laid out the future goal of releasing large, regularly scheduled publishes. Publishes began being numbered internally, and the practice caught on until publishes began being publically known by their number. The first publish to be mentioned by its number publically was Publish 10, and the first publish to be officially titled by its number was the massive Publish 15.
