| desc = This property increases the damage for most magical attacks that are casted. While the property is normally capped at 15% in PvP, the cap can be further increased to 30% for focused templates. Focus templates have no more than 30 modified skill points in more than one primary skill such as magery, necromancy, mysticism, ninjitsu, bushido, animal taming, musicianship, chivalry or spellweaving. Also no more than 30 modified skill points in the associated secondary skill such as evaluate intelligence, spirit speaking, focus, imbuing. There is no cap to spell damage increase in PvM. Spell Damage Increase (SDI) is an item property that increases the damage of most magical attacks that are cast. The increase is a true conversion; a 10% increase means the spell damage is increased by 10% and so on. The intensity range of the Spell Damage Increase item property is 1% to 18% for found rings and bracelets. The apparent maximum is 50% for special items (e.g., Shattered Obelisk Invasion Spellbook).

Spell Damage Increase is not as straightforward as it seems, as it doesn't apply to all spells. For example, it works with Word of Death, as the spell is not dependent on a secondary ability check, but it doesn't work with Pain Spike, which involves Spirit Speak, or Holy Light, which involves Karma.

This property is capped at 25% in PvP provided the character doesn't have more than 30.0 modified skill points in another main skill set; otherwise, the SDI PvP cap will be 20%. Main skills include: Magery, Necromancy, Mysticism, Ninjitsu, Bushido, Animal Taming, Musicianship, Chivalry, Spellweaving. For example, a character with Imbuing, Mysticism, and Focus is a focused mystic and has a cap of 25%, but if that character also has 31 in Evaluating Intelligence, they are not focused and have a cap of 20%.

Spell Damage Increase (SDI) is an item property that increases the damage of most magical attacks that are cast. This property is capped at 25% in PVP provided you dont have more than 30% of a skill in two different spell lines or Animal Taming or Parry. Then, you will become "focused" to that spell line and can display it from your titles menu, under overhead name, skills. So, if you have Imbuing, mysticism and focus you can be a focused mystic, but not if you have mysticism and 31 in evaluating intelligence. It's noteworthy that chivalry is amongst the magical lines even though it has no spell affected by SDI. So, if you have 120 magery and 120 chivalry, you won't be a focused mage. If you are not eligible to be focused, then your SDI pvp cap will be 20%.

It's noteworthy that Chivalry is amongst the magical lines even though it has no spell affected by SDI.
For PvE there is no cap on spell damage, so pack it on.

As with most code over time, Spell Damage Increase is not as straight-forward as it seems. It does affect Poison Strike and Wither, but it does not affect Pain Spike or Holy Light. It works with Word of Death, as the spell is not dependent on a secondary ability check, e.g. like Pain Spike, which involves Spirit Speak, or Holy Light, which involves Karma.

Spell Damage Increase
This property increases the damage for most magical attacks that are casted. This property is most commonly found on accessories and spellbooks.
Property type: Magic

Caps

PvP

This property is capped at 25% in PvP provided the character doesn't have more than 30.0 modified skill points in another main skill set; otherwise, the SDI PvP cap will be 20%. Main skills include: Magery, Necromancy, Mysticism, Ninjitsu, Bushido, Animal Taming, Musicianship, Chivalry, Spellweaving. For example, a character with Imbuing, Mysticism, and Focus is a focused mystic and has a cap of 25%, but if that character also has 31 in Evaluating Intelligence, they are not focused and have a cap of 20%.

It's noteworthy that Chivalry is amongst the magical lines even though it has no spell affected by SDI.

Note: The official in-game description (used in the infobox) has outdated information, and the caps listed above are correct. The PvP caps were changed with Publish 96.

PvM

In PvM, SDI is capped at 250. However, actual spell damage can increase further through modifiers, such as slayers or special monster vulnerabilities.[1]

Calculating spell damage

Skills and stats

A character's skill level in Evaluating Intelligence is the first thing that comes into play in calculating the magery base spell damage. The formula for how much spell damage is contributed by Evaluating Intelligence is this: ((Evaluating Intelligence * 3) / 100) + 1 This is similar with Spirit Speak for Necromancy Spells and Focus or Imbuing for Mysticism Spells, Arcane Focus for Spellweaving Spells.

The next factor involved in spell damage is intelligence. The formula for this is a 1% spell damage increase for every 10 points of intelligence, or (intelligence / 10), and drop the decimals.

The Inscription skill gives a 10% increase in the base damage for Magery spells. This bonus only takes effect when a character has achieved Grandmaster or higher skill level in Inscription.

Spells and abilities

Spellweaving spells Arcane Empowerment and Reaper Form increase spell damage. A bard's Inspire (giving SDI) & Invigorate (giving intelligence) buff spell damage. The berserk ability of the gargoyle race may increase SDI (up to 12%). Getting the Guild of Arcane Arts trade deal city buff increases the SDI value by 5%. Being cursed by a Blood Oath increases a player's spell damage but also applies the same amount of damage dealt back to the player.

Items

Factor in any SDI imparted from items and the use of a Slayer spellbook property matching the target. A well-timed usage of an Spell Focusing Sash can provide a boost. The Summer Dragonfish Pie gives a straight +5 spell damage, and the Grapes of Wrath gives +15 spell damage.

On the other hand, factor in resistance lowering and additional damage-received issues on the target, like:

SDI items

Head

Neck

Chest

Legs

Arms

Robes

Cloaks

Sets

Rings

Bracelets

Talismans

Earrings

Books

The relative effective %Damage output is in parentheses to set the order.

If the goal is maximum damage, using a slayer spellbook to match your target is clearly the most important element. These are crafted spellbooks with 0 SDI just to make the damage comparison clear. No additional SDI, but slayer books:

Shields

Weapons

Maximum possible SDI by items

As of Publish 112 in June 2022, the maximum Spell Damage Increase from equipment is 186%, which is constituted by the following:

(**A target specific Lesser Slayer Shattered Obelisk Invasion Spellbook 30%, triple damage)

Imbuing

The following resources are required to imbue the highest intensity of Spell Damage Increase (12%):

Publishes

 • Publish 96 (9 Feb 2017): Increased PvP spell damage increase cap to 20%.
